Six Ways to Make Your Own Custom Makeup

by Vaseline

When you make your own cosmetics, you’re not just controlling the ingredients and additives that end up on your face—you also get colors that are completely customized to your skin type and tone. How many times have you wished that an eyeshadow was just a touch more sheer, or that a blush was just a bit more coral? Making your own makeup is easy—all you need are some small jars or empty compacts, bits and fragments of old cosmetics, and a tub of Vaseline Petroleum Jelly.

Custom Lip Gloss
If you have a favorite lip gloss you’d like to have in a gloss form, use a sharp knife to slice off a ¼-teaspoon-sized portion and mix it with a tablespoon of Vaseline. For sheerer color, use less lipstick; for darker gloss, use more.

For a custom-blended lip shade, mix bits of favorite lipsticks together with a tablespoon of Vaseline or Vaseline Lip Therapy.

Custom Eye Shadow
Blend a pure pigment powder with Vaseline to create cream eye shadows with sheen and staying power. Pigment powders are pure, talc-free powders that are perfect for mixing. Add a small pinch—pigment powders are highly concentrated—to a tablespoon of Vaseline. (Try Make Up For Ever Pure Pigments Intense Colored Powder, $19 at Sephora)

Moisturizing Body Glow
To create a sparkling body lotion that won’t flake off like dusting powder, mix a pinch of a shimmering pigment powder into a few tablespoons of Vaseline and spread like a moisturizer.

Scented Body Lotion
For a scented body lotion with staying power, squeeze a drop of your favorite essential oil or parfum into a large quantity of Vaseline, and mix well to create a suspension.  Don’t use eau de toilette, which has a higher alcohol content and will cause the scent to evaporate sooner.

Easy Temporary Hair Color
The next time you want to add funky, colorful streaks to your hair, just mix an eye shadow or pigment powder in the color you want into a few tablespoons of Vaseline, then use your fingers to apply it to your hair. The Vaseline will wash out more easily than regular hair tinting products.

Creamy Custom Blush
To make a blush with just a hint of shine, mix any pink- or rose-colored powder or cream—from a lipstick, eye shadow, pigment powder, or another blush—into a tablespoon of Vaseline, then rub onto cheeks for a natural-looking flush.
