Three Smoky Eye Essentials

If I’m heading out for the night, I almost always go with a smoky eye and nude lip. I just love the combo and it looks good with pretty much every outfit. If I could, I would wear it to work every day too! It’s my favorite look to create because there are so many different ways you can do it, with different colors and fun additions like glitter or funky lashes. Sometimes, when I’m home for the night, I even just play around with my eye makeup and go as dramatic as possible to see what I can get away with. (Note—if you plan on doing this too, make sure you take it off before you go outside to throw out the garbage, because running into your neighbors while wearing sweatpants and a pound of eye makeup is very, very embarrassing). My favorite tools right now for creating the perfect eye are all simple and easy to use for a quick glamorous look.

First, you have to have the best tools for the job. My favorite brush at the moment is the Sephora Collection Pro Natural Smudge Brush #11. I find it essential for getting the perfect dark smudge of color right above and below my eyes. (I always find it particularly hard to smudge underneath my eyes, but this brush makes it a lot easier). The goat hair bristles are fabulous at applying color and the $18 price tag isn’t too steep, especially considering how much you’ll use it.

Stila’s Smudge Crayon Waterproof Eye Primer + Shadow + Liner in Dazzle is a shade exclusive to Sephora, which is why it took me a little while to discover it. It’s a dark black with glittery sparkles in it and you can use it to create a smoky eye all on its own if you’re in a hurry, since you can use it as both liner and shadow. It also layers fabulously over any black liner you already have and lasts for hours once it’s on. It’s a smoky eye staple everyone should own.

Maybelline’s Great Lash Lots of Lashes Mascara in Blackest Black is the deal of the century, in my opinion. It costs about $5 in drugstores, and—unlike the regular Great Lash, which I don’t love—this one gives me crazy long, thick, jet black lashes that don’t smudge or smear. I think it’s the brush, which is strangely cone-shaped and lets me get to every single lash easily. I have a ton of expensive mascaras, but I’ve been reaching for this one almost every day, which should tell you something. It just works.

All this talking about a smoky eye is making me want to do one right now. Be right back…
