Prolonging Summer: Scents & Scentsibilities

Even though summer vacation is over, children are back at school, and our heads are back on our shoulders, I am determined to hold on to the feeling of summer for as long as I can. One way I’m doing this is to seek out fragrances that remind me of carefree vacations and the simple pleasures of a summer day. It’s working, thanks to two very different fragrances that surprised and delighted me.

Limited Edition Daisy Black Eau de Parfum by Marc Jacobs

When Marc Jacobs released the eau de toilette Daisy last year, I fell in love with the bottle, but wasn’t terribly impressed with the fragrance at first. Daisy is light and airy, the sort of fragrance that’s easy to wear and disappears just as easily off your skin. As I wore it, however, I came to appreciate the simplicity and charm of Daisy.

The Eau de Parfum version, Daisy Black, has just been released, and it’s basically a more concentrated, longer lasting version of the original—and very popular—Daisy.

It’s one of those fragrances that you can wear anywhere and feel sure that you’ll smell nice (I always get lots of compliments on how good I smell when I wear it) without having to worry that the scent is too strong.

The top notes are wild strawberry, red grapefruit, and violet leaves. Heart notes are violet, gardenia, and jasmine, with base notes of musk, white wood, and vanilla. At first sniff, you might think that this is another overly fruity floral with a sweet undertone, but it isn’t. The green of the violet offsets the fruit and the whole scent is light, sheer, and joyful. Daisy Black stays true to the original Daisy, but lasts longer and is a little more intense: a Marguerite to its simpler cousin the Daisy, but just as wearable and carefree.

The bottle is black with a gold Daisy stopper, and it’s just as cute as the original bottle.

Eau de Parfum, 1.7 ounces, $72. Available at Neiman Marcus.

The little sister Daisy I have and love it. Big sister sounds absolutely great also. I would try it. Your discription of Virgin Island Water makes it sound so carefree; from what you've described, I could see using it on those cold, dreary days - it would make you feel much happier as you brave the cold outdoors. Thanks again for a great review.

The Virgin Island Water really grew on me - now I love it! I'm with you, I'm not a tropical scent kind of girl, but this smells fantastic. Thanks for the good recos...wish I could get both of them but I might have to wait until some kind person gifts me. :)
