Give Yourself a Splash

Once the weather starts turning warmer, I get very excited to revamp my fragrance wardrobe and put my heavier scents in the back of my closet until September or October rolls around again. (Although living in Los Angeles does kind of throw off that ritual sometimes because the weather doesn’t always cooperate.) April is when I start trying to find my perfect new summer scent (or scents!), and right now, I’m loving the Marc Jacobs Splash Cocktail Collection for summer 2011.

The collection consists of three different scents, and Marc was inspired by “the first sip of a refreshing cocktail on a sunny summer day.” (Side note—that description makes me want to pack my cutest bathing suit and head for a tropical resort with a swim-up bar in the pool immediately.) The three scents in the collection—Cranberry, Ginger, and Curacao—couldn’t be more different on paper, but each of them brings a relaxed, chilled-out vibe when you spritz it on.

If I had to pick a favorite, it would be cranberry. It’s such a unique mix of tart and sweet, with a little citrus mixed in. It’s fun and feminine and not overpowering at all, which is one of my favorite things about the Splash collection. None of the scents are so strong that they would make people wrinkle their noses if you stood next to them in an elevator. (I mean, who wants to be THAT girl?)

Curacao is a close second for me. It’s a really clean fragrance—it reminds me a little of my all-time favorite Splash scent, Rain, which I love so much that I have two backups in my closet for the sad, sad day when my original bottle runs out. Curacao has notes of blood orange, violet, and white moss in it—it’s the perfect daytime scent for steamy weather, but it wouldn’t be out of place at night either.

Ginger is also really interesting and spicy, with a warm, lingering scent to it. I can really smell the sandalwood and musk notes in it, but your nose might better detect the coriander and geranium bourbon. (See? Interesting, right?) I’d wear this one to a romantic dinner in a dimly lit restaurant because I feel like anyone who catches its scent will immediately want to lean in closer to try and see if they can smell it again.

The best part about the Splash collection is that you get a ton of product when you buy them. Each bottle is a whopping ten fluid ounces for $68, so you can afford to liberally spray them on or use them every day if you want without fear of running out. (I’ve had Rain for at least two years now; I use it all the time and still have a quarter of the original bottle left.) Gorgeous, unique scents and a lot of value for your money? Consider me sold!
