I bought a new dress. We bought tickets two weeks in advance. We made reservations at the swankiest restaurant in the city and had a round (alright, a few) of cosmos (duh) before heading to the theater. The line to get our seats was around the block. Nearly three hours later, we walked out pissed off, disappointed, and wishing we had gotten another round (or three) of cosmos. I hated the Sex and the City movie. It didn’t channel the chills, heartfelt emotion, and depth of the series. What did you think?
What Did You Think of the Sex and the City Movie?

I thought the beginning of the movie felt really forced and contrived. I attributed it to the fact that there was a long hiatus, among other things. There were scenes that didn't seem to fit (e.g. Miranda's sex scene seemed more Samanthaesque) but there were those that made me laugh out loud. Not to mention, who wouldn't love that co-op and walk in closet! True to the series, I loved the shoes, seeing the outfits as well as the streets of NYC that I grew to love. It took me back to my years living on the UES, with wine and take out, hanging at my friend's apt. to watch S&TC every Sunday night (because I didn't have cable).

actually i liked it very much
I loved the movie and didn't want it to end. I enjoyed seeing what happened to the characters and enjoyed how the writers cleverly intertwined all their story lines. That said, I was disappointed that many of the characters were not true to who they were in the series. Would Steve really cheat on Miranda when he was so surprisingly committed to her throughout the series? Would Big really leave Carrie at the altar after all they've been through? And would Carrie really not be near suicidal let alone not shed a few tears?t Would Smith really say to Samantha that Valentine's Day was no big deal after spending more than 4 of them with her? It was hard to believe that Smith would let Samantha go without some cross coastal compromise. That was the part that was a dissapointment. Had I not been familiar with these characters already, I would've enjoyed this movie for the good story it was.

Although it was fun to see all the familiar characters, the format works much better as a half hour segment. The pithy dialog and the characters' banter lost something in this extended movie. The outfits were fun to watch, though the make-up was inconsistent, especially on Carrie. However, I went to the movie not so much to be inspired, but to participate in an event of pop culture, thus allowing me to converse freely in dialogs and blogs.
I loved the movie!! I went with some girlfriends, and had no expectations except to see the women on screen again and to see where their lives had taken them. I was pleased with the whole movie. There were a couple of slow parts, but being over 40 myself, it was great to see women of this age+ on the screen. I'll get the DVD when it comes out and watch it again.

This is just another example of people not taking movies for what they are. Indiana Jones is too cheesy, Across the Universe is too musical-y, Sex and The City isn't as good as the series. It's so frustrating to me as a film school graduate to see amazing feats in filmmaking being ridiculed for everything they're not. What about what they are? Indy is George Lucas and Stephen Spielberg reunited. They make effects-filled films with sub-par acting and over the top storylines. Across the Universe's actors express themselves with the lyrics and melodies of one of the most beloved bands of all time, of course the story line was lacking - they were singing the whole time, of course the musical numbers were musical-y, it was an amazing experience, and one which YOU could not have done any better. And as for Sex and the City. We got to see our fab four reunited with an extremely high production value backing it. I ask you to try to take films for what they are, you'll be way less disappointed.

To tell you the truth, I'll wait for it to come out on DVD, then buy it at half price when it hits Columbia House Club. I've been a big fan of Kim Catrell since the early '80s, when I first saw her in the movie "Porky's". Damn, that's a funny movie! Her in the locker room scene, sniffing jock straps and yellin' "Oh yeah! Oh yeah!". I bust a gut just thinkin' about it. Damn, she was hot!

I wouldn't say I hated it, but it was definitely not up to par with the series. But what could they do? They couldn't really change anything about how the series ended, since it was just so perfect, so they had to make us think things were going to change without really changing anything. And it was definitely HIGH on the cheesiness factor. Also, I really wish the Carrie and Big story would have ended with them on the closet floor, no marriage. It was just too much with him getting down and proposing to her...and so not Mr. Big. I did like the Miranda and Steve storyline, though.
