It goes without saying that men and women respect and admire different celebrities, and for differing reasons. For instance, women might find the humanitarian efforts of actresses like Salma Hayek commendable and heartwarming, while men think Harrison Ford is awesome in any of his movies where stuff explodes.
What men won’t often admit is that there’s a certain group of celebrities that we hate with a fiery passion, and it’s the same group of celebrities that women tend to appreciate and canonize. In the interest of gender communications though, I’ll gladly share their names. Here’s a look at four celebrities who women would gladly take advice from and men would gladly throw into oncoming traffic.
George Clooney
Women love George Clooney because he’s classy, good-looking, suave, rich, basically everything that 99 percent of the men on the planet are not. This is not jealousy or hate from guys. However, we do hate George Clooney for taking the awesome Frank Sinatra Ocean’s 11 franchise, and using it as an excuse to drink with his friends at a casino or resort every three years. He’s also not much of an actor. There, I said it.
Dr. Phil
I know that it isn’t universal—still, feel free to spout your rage in the comments section—but women seem to respect Dr. Phil at large, or at least treat him like a doctor. Thing is, he’s not. Guys are tired of anyone who gets on TV to tell everyone what’s wrong with them, especially when the solution is unhealthy pseudo-psychiatry from a guy who looks exactly like at least two of our P.E.
Jennifer Aniston
Women respect Jennifer because when she was cheated on. And rather than resort to a blubbering mess on late-night TV, she showed a lot of strength and resilience, and ended up as a great relationship role model. Men hate her, but it has nothing to do with the whole Brad Pitt affair. In fact, we hate Brad Pitt too, but that’s also beside the point. Guys hate Jennifer Aniston because she seems like a genuinely annoying and overly self-confident woman coasting by on good looks and America’s mistaken opinion of her acting abilities. In other words, pretty much for the same reasons that we hate Brad Pitt.
Oprah
It would take 1,000 Dr. Phils to equal guys’ hate of the Oprah behemoth. To many women, Oprah is a vessel of open dialogue in the United States where gender inequality, racism and other thorny issues can be approached reasonably. To men, she’s an opportunist who eats man’s soul and encourages the kind of open sharing of emotions that leads to days of hiding under the Barcalounger. The truth is probably somewhere in between, but Oprah hate among men is unequaled. I don’t think I can even put it into relatable terms.
