For almost twenty-five years, NBC ruled the TV airwaves, coining the term “must-see TV” to refer to the 8–10 p.m. comedy block. Each season, the network had some of the most-watched shows, and transformed Thursday night into the most profitable and coveted time on TV. From the family-oriented The Cosby Show in the ’80s to the self-conscious workplace comedies of today, here’s a look at some of the sitcoms that made up two decades of “must-see TV.” Not only is each program a reflection of culture, the evolution might even indicate what’s next for the network as it attempts to restore itself to its former glory.
