I Twihard to Get Into the Whole Vampire Thing

I should be upfront and mention that I have never participated in any Twilight-related cultural experiences. I haven’t read the books or seen the movies, and the closest I’ve come to that world is talking with a friend who grew up in the real-life town of Forks, Washington about how the city is now overrun with teenage girls and their moms. (I also walked by a Hot Topic one time, which seems to count.) When I received the Twilight Beauty makeup collection, I wasn’t quite sure how to write a story that would really capture the Twilight phenomenon.

But not knowing anything about anything hasn’t stopped me before, so in celebration of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part I (which comes out on Friday, November 18), I put on the Luna Twilight Moonshadows Eyeshadow, along with the Gleam Metallic Mascara, then I slathered myself with the Face Glow and Body Glow and topped the whole look off with the Femme Fatale Lip Gloss in an attempt to look as otherworldly and irresistible as possible.

My first instinct was to go for a “winsome and vulnerable” look.

But that seemed wrong, because Bella’s sort of a plain Jane, if I’m not mistaken, and my Twilight look was unmistakably vampy, pardon the pun. I wore the Moonshadows duo in Snow Storm, which contains a shimmery gunmetal powder and a shimmery white cream. The overall effect was subtly smoky, which I liked, but the cream shadow didn’t last (cream shadows never do). The Femme Fatale Lip Gloss in Myth was a deep, shiny wine color, which was pretty, and had a nice coconutty flavor. The collection also includes a special Twilight Lip Venom by DuWop, which is like regular Lip Venom, but tinted.

So since I realized that I was never going to pass for bland and invisible, I decided that I had more of a glam, vampire look. A glampire, if you will.

The vampires are fairly glam, right? I mean, they are hundreds of years old, so they must have good perspective on style. Are Twilight vampires evil or good? Being evil sounded more fun.

The pictures don’t show it, but I was sparkling something fierce—that Luna Twilight Body Glow is no joke. It had a really pleasant dry finish that I liked, and actually gave a very sophisticated shimmer. (Sort of like Benefit’s old Kitten Goes to Paris powder, but in a liquid form.)

Do the Twilight vampires have to avoid the sun?

Realizing that I was way out of touch with Stephanie Meyer vampire theology, I went back to the premise that I was a winsome, awkward, plain but secretly beautiful, brilliant, delicious-smelling, lovestruck teenager. I decided that I’d be Team Edward, mostly because living with a hairy, shedding werewolf sounds like it would involve massive amounts of vacuuming, and I am most definitely not into that.

The collection is available at Twilightbeauty.com, and there are many more products than the few I wore—scented body shimmer mists, palettes, shimmery nail polish, shimmery loose powder shadows...shimmer is a big thing here. The only thing that doesn’t shimmer is the perfume, Immortal Twilight, which has a surprisingly nice, musky-powdery scent. They’re perfect holiday gifts for tweens and Twihards, not to mention anyone else who loves picking glitter out of their hair for days. Although I’d never delved into the world of Twilight before, being completely ageless is definitely something I could get into.
