Kindred Spirits

As we go through life, people will step in and out of our path like the ebb and flow of the tides. Some will stay longer than others, lingering around only to make a minor impression in our molds, while others will fly by the night and completely reshape our being. Then there are those who enter our lives for specific reasons, sent to us for a purpose beyond our understanding. We consider these people our kindred spirits.

At times when we feel no emotion, no joy, or no happiness, a kindred spirit re-invigorates our life; re-introduces colors to a lonely world of black and white. Times in our lives when God turns the lights down on us, dark times we have to experience painful and hurtful feelings. During these low points, we question ourselves, we question our faith, and we question why God would ever do anything to hurt us. We may not realize it at the moment, but oftentimes God will cast darkness upon us with the sole intent for us to fully appreciate the brighter days, for us to truly know happiness because we understand sadness.

A kindred spirit shines light onto our darkness. A kindred spirit helps navigate us through our lives individually and collectively. Kindred spirits share an intense understanding for one another. This understanding has no boundaries, and no words, nor brush strokes, nor deeply expressed sentiments can describe it. That understanding encompasses our strengths, our highs, and our joys, but it also extends into understanding each other’s faults, pitfalls, and vulnerabilities. True kindred spirits will not only embrace these faults, but a greater respect will be developed for each other in spite of them.

A kindred spirit knows your energy. They can see the colors you reflect and can sense thoughts and feelings you may not even see in yourself. The relationship between these two people can be highly dynamic and synergistic—each individual learning from the other and enhancing their own lives while feeding into the energy of the other. In kindred spirits, there exists a perpetual current of energy that flows between them. The two share a relationship that offers balance and stability.

For kindred spirits, there is a deep love and spiritual bond that separates them from the other superficial relationships that generally fill their lives. Conversations are deep, emotional exchanges that encourage personal growth and promote the goodwill of the world around them. When two kindred spirits connect, there is usually a birth of creativity that is wrapped around a mutual passion.

The connection that kindred spirits feel is instantaneous and there is usually no real reasoning for the instant attraction. Like magnets, the closer the two become, the stronger the pull grows between them. Perhaps it is the experiences of the soul in former lives that create this immediate affinity. On a conscience level, we may not comprehend these sudden feelings of comfort and security. It is no longer within in our control to dictate the feelings and dynamics of the relationship, but rather, our subconscious and deeply rooted spirit that lies within, takes over. The two souls are merely being brought together again by means of the physical realm. However, the bond and connection that is shared between the two far transcends the physical realm we live in, and touches on the more profound, mystic, and misunderstood spiritual realm.

As individuals, we will endure specific, personal struggles that will dictate the way we view the world and the people around us. These personal trials prepare us as physical beings to accept the connection of our kindred spirit. Without these struggles, we may completely be oblivious to the presence of our counterpart, and our spirits will have to wait another lifetime to be reunited.

For kindred spirits, there are no reservations and no walls—only pure and raw, uncensored and unfiltered emotions, not polluted by self-consciousness and self-doubt. A kindred spirit sets you free from emotional inhibition and enables you to speak from the heart, and to expose the most intimate and tightly guarded facets of your soul. There is no feeling of shame or judgment upon speaking. This exposure intensifies the bond between the two and creates more confidence and stability within the relationship.

I feel that my boss and I are kindred spirits. I felt a connection with her I didn't understand and still don't understand the purpose. We oddly have a lot of simaliarities in our lives right now, and things in common. We have only known each other for about half a year. Though we share very similar circunstances, she isn't willing to comment to a real friendship outside of work. I do know God has brought us together for a reason, and hoping someday we can be friends outside of work. I was hoping to ask some questions to you to help shed some light on this. I loved this article, I'm just needing to know a little more about how to go bout this and what role do I play in this relationship?

Cissy, Thank you for your comments. One of my friendships inspired me to write this piece. Hold on to those people that add value and substance to your life, they are extremely rare!

I can definitely relate to this feeling of having a kindred spirit. I share this connection with a friend of mine she has been through everything with me. The good, the bad, and the ugly. She is always there like a bright shining light always there to guide me. She never judges me and always respects what constitutes my happiness without criticizing. At times we have drifted apart as one at times tends to do due to life struggles and many changes but the time away seems to fade fast once we come together again. No awkwardness or resentment. I am sure that til the day I disappear from existence as I take my final breath she will be there.
It feels good to write.
