A Future Love?

His name is Chris.

I first met Chris in the 7th grade. We didn’t really talk, I only knew him since he was dating a friend of a friend. At the time Chris was chubby, short, had braces, and terrible acne. Doesn’t sound too appealing now does it? I didn’t start talking to Chris until the summer that we were entering 9th grade. I had just made a new screen name on AOL instant messenger when his odd screen name popped into my head. I added him to my buddy list then as soon as I clicked OK I heard the little door opening sound. He was online.

I was feeling a bit confident that night so I decided to message him. He didn’t quite remember me at first but we still talked and it was for a few hours.

He was funny, and we shared a lot of the same interests. That summer we would talk more and more each day. Then my computer crashed. I had lost all contact with Chris, I was dumb and didn’t even ask for a phone number. I had to go the rest of my summer wondering what Chris was up to, or if he was wondering why I hadn’t talked to him in such a long time. I was really bummed. But finally the first day of 9th grade. All of my classes were a blur and I had completely forgotten about Chris.

Period 8/9 came around I had gym. (We had to report to the Health Room instead or the Gym.) I walked in just wanting to get the day over with now, grabbed a seat in the back and waited for the teacher. I watched the doorway as kids came in and sat down by themselves or greeted friends in that class.

My friend Tim walked in with someone behind him. I couldn’t tell who it was right away so I just looked away. Our teacher walked in and started calling names for attendance. “Chris Harlot?” “Here.” said a deep voice. “Chris Harlot” I said to myself. Wait a minute, that’s Chris? I leaned forward and looked to my right, Chris looked back at me and smiled. Chris no longer had his braces, or his terrible acne or his short hair that was flipped up in the front and loaded with gel, and he certainly was not chubby and short anymore. I froze as looked at the new and much improved Chris Harlot. He was not the boy I remembered.

Anyways, as our freshman year went on, Chris, Tim, and myself had a blast in Gym class. Too bad I wasn’t single anymore I thought laughing to myself. I had been dating another guy since the 8th grade. He was a great guy but 9th grade changed him completely. We fought about everything. I couldn’t take it. A few days later I found out my best friend Erica was dating Chris. I asked her why she didn’t tell me, she said she didn’t want to upset me. I laughed a little at that and thought why would that upset me? Chris and I were just friends. Erica told me that she invited Chris to come over that weekend and that I could come over too if I wanted.

It was Friday I was trying to get off of the phone with my boyfriend Rick. We had been fighting all day, which was no surprise there. I left for Erica’s house and hoped I would forget about Rick. I did once I saw Chris. The three of us sat out on Erica’s front porch. Erica and Chris in the bench swing, and me on the floor. Rick wouldn’t stop calling me even after I answered and told him to stop calling me. Then I got a text message from a random number saying, “Who’s the stalker that’s calling you.” I’d never seen the number so I was a little confused, I asked Erica if she knew who’s number it was. Chris laughed and said “it’s mine.” I smiled to myself and discreetly saved his number into my phone. That night Erica called me and said, “Can you break up with Chris for me?” I didn’t say anything at first, but then managed a “Why?” She told me she didn’t like him anymore. Like he was an old shirt or something, she was just going to throw him out. I said fine I’ll do it. Thinking this is terrible how could she do that to Chris? I sucked it up and waited for Monday.
