Whenever a news story about blatantly unfit parents surfaces, people grumble, “You need a license to have a dog, but any weirdo can have a baby!” But then again, if they instituted tests before people were allowed to breed, who’s to say any of us would pass?
Nobody’s perfect, and parents are no exception. Yet we seem to have some unspoken agreement on what qualifications make a fit parent. What one quality do you think is non-negotiable for a mom or dad to have? Empathy? Patience? Financial resources? If you were granting parenting licenses, what’s the most important thing you’d look for?
