These days, we are looking for something we can hold on to, something that brings us joy throughout the day, and in this ever-changing world, sometimes that is not so easy to find. But don’t lose hope, I have the answer. Well ... at least the answer for me. Let me introduce you to Andy, he’s is by far the best man in my life. No ... I didn’t finally find the nerve to leave Mr. Wrong; Andy is my ferret, that’s right, I said ferret. I have had dogs and cats throughout my life (will always hold a special place in my heart for pit bulls), but Andy stands above and beyond them all. I got Andy three years ago in Hagerstown, Maryland; my husband is an electrician and we travel all over for his work. I usually find myself in lonely hotel rooms while he works all day, I had thought about getting a puppy to keep me company but didn’t really want to go through potty training a new puppy and not all hotels allow pets, and puppies can be hard to hide. So I started looking into other pets and stumbled across ferrets. I went to the local pet store and there he was. He was a bit older then the other four that were caged together and the clerk told me he had been passed up several times, and through several litters he was always left behind. The other ferrets were jumping on him and playing a little rougher than it appeared he wanted to. When I heard that nobody wanted him, I knew he was for me.
I brought him home with me and from that day on we have been inseparable, he is not like the other ferrets I read about, Andy doesn’t tear things up, he goes potty in his litter boxes, he comes when you call his name. He is much like a kitten when he plays and he sleeps about twenty hours a day, and let me tell you he curls up in the most comfortable positions, boy do I envy him. When we travel with work he sleeps in my lap and I can sneak him into ant hotel. He never makes a sound and is always there with a sweet kiss when you need it.
One time I thought he might need a ferret friend, so I purchased another one, brought it home and Andy got under the dresser and refused to even look at it, I returned it the next day; it was at the point I realized Andy didn’t know he was a ferret. I truly am thankful every day for this little guy and can’t imagine how I would make thru each day without him.
Although ferrets do require a lot care and ferret-proofing to insure their safety, he is every bit worth it. If you’re thinking about a ferret for a pet, be sure to read everything you can find about them first to insure your home will be his forever home. There are so many ferrets in shelters and in ads to adopt because people get them and then decided too much work so they just get rid of them; these little guys and gals get very attached to there care takers, and I’m sure it breaks their hearts to be replaced. I have always said that when I found Andy, he needed me as much as I needed him.
He brings me joy when my world gets very cold and dark.
