Originating in 19th century Belgium by crossing local cattle with British cattle, the Belgian Blue cattle are gigantic bovine wonders. Their enormous size and muscle mass, sometimes called "double muscling," is a naturally occurring mutation of the gene for myostatin, a protein that regulates muscle growth. This mutation results in accelerated lean muscle growth.
Nice job Sohail Kahn, way to read the article properly. Nice pictures, does anyone know if the meat is tougher since the muscles are bigger and probably more rough than the regular cows in the U.S.? I call the regular because I know nothing about bulls or cows.
@ Sohail Khan: These cows arent fed steroids nor nuclear waste, they just dont have a natural occuring gene to stop their muscles from growing, it has been achived trough selecting particuarly big cows and then breeding them. like you have done with peas and corn..
After looking at these cow, is it any wonder that you have mad cow disease, children who are getting all sorts of health problems, etc. These cows are being fed Steroids, meat by products, and maybe even nuclear waste. These cows are NOT natural. I wouldn't want a steak, milk, or cheese from these monsters.
Beautiful animals and lovely pictures! There ar many more breeds that exhibits double muscling like the Charolais, Limousine, Piedmontiese and others. Genetic excellence in terms of meat production!
It feels good to write.
