1. “I’m not sure what I want. What are you going to have?”
The truth: I know exactly what I want, but I’m going to wait and see what you get so I know how much you’re spending/eating.
2. “I never check Facebook.”
The truth: Of course I check Facebook, but I don’t want you to know that I’ve already looked you up.
3. “I listen to all kinds of music.”
The truth: I’m not confident enough in my music taste to tell you what I really like yet, so I’m just going to keep it vague.
4. “Oh, really? Thanks, I just came from work.”
The truth: I just came from work ... where I spent thirty minutes in the bathroom changing and perfecting my hair.
5. “This is actually my first online date.”
The truth: This is actually my third online date, but you don’t have to know that.
6. “I was a cheerleader in high school.”
The truth: Nope, no I wasn’t.
7. “Yeah, I’ve been here a few times.”
The truth: I bring all of my dates here. It’s my safety!
8. “I was at dinner the other night ... uhm, with a friend, and ...”
The truth: I was on a date the other night ... with a date, and ...
9. “No, please, I’m totally fine. I feel completely comfortable walking home alone. Don’t worry about it!”
The truth: I would literally rather be mugged than have this date go on a second longer.
10. “Oh, are you sure? I can give you money for my part.”
The truth: Please don’t take me up on that, please don’t take me up on that.
11. “I’m not really looking for anything serious right now, I’m having fun just dating.”
The truth: I’d secretly be thrilled if you were my soul mate, but I’m trying to play it cool.
