I dated a man from my town—wrong thing to do because my town is small and I keep running into him. We lasted about a month. After we parted ways—my choice because he was an ass—he showed up on my monthly sex offenders list for aggravated sexual assault. Well, that gelled it! I met this man locally, not online, so I decided not to date anyone I didn’t meet online.
The thing that upset me most was that I really felt uncomfortable about him (didn’t know why) and went on one of those sites on which you pay for background checks. Nothing came of it—no mention of the charges. When I got the list from People Finders, I wrote to the site and asked how did they miss that one—no answer.
Meanwhile, I started dating a man I met online. He lives nearby, but not in my town, so if things go downhill, I won’t be running into him every time I go to a local restaurant or grocery store. I went back online because I had a subscription that hadn’t run out. I saw his face and wrote to him. We hit it off instantly and are still dating, although from a distance because he is working out of state. I don’t know how you can figure out who is dangerous, except to trust your gut. My current beau works for the federal government, so I figure he’s relatively safe; no felonies lurking in the background.
