The Late Date

So in my singledom and lack of social skills (not really, I just don’t go out much), I’ve resorted to looking online for a date. My top favorite website? Craigslist, of all places. I’ve posted a personal ad on there twice but had no luck so I decided to do what I would never be able to in real life and just talk to the men instead and making them come to me. Some are okay but they usually end the same. A few e-mails here and there but nothing ever happens beyond that. There’s a few times I’ve actually met anyone in person with the exception of this one guy who was absolutely terrible!

I should’ve seen all those red flags waving in my face before we even decided to meet but I wanted to see how he would act in person. See, he could barely even hold a conversation online and honestly, he wasn’t that attractive BUT … I still wanted to see what would happen in person even though I already knew so I guess I kinda set myself up for failure anyway. I honestly just wanted to get out of the house and maybe get a good meal and some drinks (and any woman who claims she’s never been out with a guy strictly for that reason at least once is kidding herself). However, he wants to meet at a park so my “plan” backfired. So we try to decide on a time. I say 3 p.m., he says 4 p.m. 4 p.m. it is. I get to the park a little before four (like, literally 3:58 p.m.), let him know I’m there and ask where he is. He says he’s on his way. Now, I really don’t like being late and I hate for people to be late because I honestly don’t like waiting but one would think that because this is our first time meeting and that it was HIS idea to meet in his favorite park, that he’d have the decency to show up on time but whatever. He comes around 4:10 p.m.and we get out of our cars and sit on a bench in the shade. Let the awkward moments begin!

I’m doing ALL the talking, not because I want to but because every time I get quiet, he doesn’t say anything. He doesn’t ask any questions and barely comments on the things I’m saying so either one of two things are in effect now … he’s not as interested as he said he was online (and over the phone) or he’s just REALLY shy, which he told me already but really? You have NOTHING to say? So an hour goes by and he has to take his little sister to work, he says he’ll hit me up later and maybe we can get some drinks, ok fine. Literally right after we leave the park he texts me and says “Wow, you are so pretty!” I say thank you and send a smiley face. A few hours pass and he texts me (he NEVER calls, always texts). He wants to know what I want to do. I say “I thought we were going to get some drinks?” He says, “Well, I don’t get paid until nine o’clock and I don’t have an ID.” I say, “So how were we going to drink if you don’t have an ID?” Apparently he thought I’d just come by his house … sweetie, we JUST met, I don’t think so. So we don’t meet again that night.

After a week or so of very awkward texting and me being slightly irritated by him, he now wants to meet up again and no, he still doesn’t have an ID. He still wants me to come to his house or him to mine … neither of which I was okay with so he says “Let’s go to the beach.” I ask what time and he says “Around nine.” Now, I live about twenty minutes (or more) from the beach and the idea of having to drive there at 9pm is not looking good but I reluctantly agreed. However, I decided around eight that I didn’t want to go anymore and if he had some other suggestions that may be closer to my house, I’m open. He didn’t know what was around here so I suggest that we go to a small park that’s well lit and across the street from a few bars and restaurants so if something does happen, at least someone will see us.
