I was sitting on my couch and watching the evening news. It was the night of Valentine’s Day, meaning it was almost over. The news had too many crime scenes and tragedies, conflicts in Egypt, also the coming fight of my co-countryman, Manny Pacquaio, and the Grammy Awards. Moreover, the main attraction of this all is about the celebration of we called now a “heart’s day”! Besides all tension around the world (even here in my country), still, everyone was excited to celebrate this day and looking forward to having a great day (couples or singles)! My country is ahead of New York City by twelve hours and sixteen hours ahead of California, so we celebrated this first! And my country celebrates it in sort of activities. In Metro Manila (our country’s capital city), our policemen and armies were giving away a roses at train stations and buses to all female passengers. So sweet isn’t it?! Some of the college’s schools have their own celebration by offering songs and give roses to their female schoolmates as well! There are also celebrating by organizing a beauty pageant by male and female candidates, couples kissing in one minute (or so). In General Santos City (Manny Pacman’s home city), they are having a Love Run, not only by couples but also a whole family (remember it is a special heart’s day). As well, weddings not only for single police men and women, but also those in prison (it’s a celebration for everyone). A fireworks display and many more activities!
Okay, this story is about my own Valentine’s Day. It was not exciting actually, as my husband stayed in his homeland for work. Yes, I am truly lonely and missing him so very much! But thankfully, we now have our technologies and we can regularly keep in touch with our love ones! And right away, we can let them know our feelings without waiting for a greeting card arrive. There is email, IM, Twitter, Facebook, and more social networking. Let me bring you in on my February 14, midnight. And this time is February 13, 8:00 in the morning of my husband’s time zone. I sent him a greeting message and he answered back! It was Sunday, I know it is only the day he could do his laundry after six-day workweek, clean his apartment, do shopping, and things he could not do after his work time (which all his left time before his bedtime spending with me, emailing each other). And I let him do them first. And I will just wait on our time schedule to talk with him and I will just try to get some sleep as it was past midnight already. But my insomnia is here again. I cannot sleep yet, so I just check my FB. I have several friends working abroad around the world who are online already. But I feel so empty and lonesome today as it should be a very special day for a couple. So then, I just did some tagging on my wedding photos. And I am so happy (surprised a little too) when my husband starts commenting on our wedding photos and liking them all! It is not my intention to get his attention, but I just realize then and remember that my husband could know right away as he only uses phone application (he doesn’t have a computer). He will know the notification right away on his phone.
We then start sharing using FB and I feel my Valentine’s Day is a true heart’s day! I am very glad to hear over and over again how happy he was on our wedding day (he brings it up often on our regular daily chatting online)! It is memorable for him and one of the best things that ever happened in our lives! It is always in my thoughts the way my husband messages me about how he was very proud of me! And how he was so happy with me on our wedding day! What an accomplishment!
