Becoming We ... For Me

It was June; the summer air filled every place I went. Seeing how I live in the south that seemed to be everywhere. I was ready for a road trip, to venture off and be carried away by the world. I finally got a week and a half off that I was wanting and a friend and I decided we would drive to New Mexico. Johnny (my friend) wanted to stop in Oklahoma to see his then girlfriend, I thought sure why not. Well his girlfriend introduced me to her hired help, Steven. He was dirty from his days work, but I looked past it because he had the most beautiful smile I have ever seen. His eyes caught mine and in that moment I felt a connection. A group of Johnny’s friends and I drove to a drive-in movie somewhere up North Oklahoma. The night sky brought a slit breeze that just lifted the humidity and allowed for a comfortable atmosphere to fall over all who watched the movie.

After the movie was over the whole group went back to Johnny’s girlfriend’s house where a couple of us went in the back yard to just relax under the stars. The night sky was very clear and the stars were out as if they would never shine again. Steven and I started to discuss our futures and what we wanted out of life. We talked for a while when he finally got up and left me there with out saying anything. I thought that was weird. I finally saw him just walking around. I crept up to him and took him down like I had known him forever. He then got into playful mode and tried to take me down. I gave in and let him, (who wants a girl to take a man down anyways) it was then he did something I would never forget. He came close to my face and kissed me ever so gently on the lips. I thought what was that? Did he really just kiss me? It was honestly the best first kiss I have ever had. After that we fell asleep under the star filled sky and that was the last of single hood for me.

The long distance was crazy at first. The first six months consisted of us meeting every other weekend. The drive was about five hours either way. After many miles and gas refills we decided it was time to move in. I moved Steven to Arkansas. I showed him why it is called the naturally state, and with in another six months we were married.

July 7, 2007 I took his last name and my first and last kiss as single being taken off the market. We have been married now for six months and I still have no complaints. We are going to try for kids next year about this same time, and hopefully we will be moving back to his home town.

I never thought that I would turn into “WE,” but it did. It is the best decision that I have made thus far in my life. When it is meant to be there is nothing to stop it. No matter the miles, time, money, doubting individuals, and all the stress that comes with it. Nothing matters because you just have to be with that person good or bad. In the end it all comes together, and you realize that this is what growing up is all about. Getting older and finding that one person that just completes you to a “T.”
