Trash the Dress! Wedding Photo Contest Winners

There’s nothing more fun for a wedding photographer than “Trash the Dress” photos. They require timing, skill, and often difficult locations to get the shot just right. The Wedding Photojournalist Association (WPJA) plays host to many contests each year and the Trash the Dress category is one of the most popular.

Here is a collection of various Trash the Dress contest winners from the WPJA. Congratulations to all the winners!

@Sasha: Actually, you'd be surprised that it's not that easy to donate the dress as one might think. I wanted to donate mine, but when researching different organizations that run programs like this, their standards were almost ridiculous. Mine didn't meet theirs on a lot of criteria. And they want you to have the dress cleaned before donating. As a young newlywed, I really couldn't afford to, really, pay someone to take my dress. Instead, it has sat inside its bag for the last 10 years. Can't wait to trash mine when my photographer friend comes to visit next month.

Some of these photos are impressive, but I can't help thinking that there are an awful lot of brides-to-be that can't afford one of these beautiful dresses for their own wedding. From that perspective, destroying one just for the sake of some photos seems like a terrible waste. My city has a couple of organizations that work to provide "recycled" prom dresses and wedding dresses for women who couldn't otherwise afford one - why not check to see if that's an option for you locally and then have pictures taken of the "new" bride wearing the dress you donated? Seems like that would be a much more rewarding thing to do.

If it isn't a tradition it should become one. Pretty funny pictures, especially the one where the veil is stepped on. Ouch!

Amazing photos, but I am confused. Is "trashing the dress" a new tradition? I ended up selling my dress to pay for a really nice honeymoon.
It feels good to write.
