Man Versus Man’s Best Friend

I was describing my Golden Retriever and hadn’t gotten much past tall, blond, handsome, and easy going before a woman overhearing me asked if he has a brother. She realized her mistake when I told her that I thought he had around twenty brothers and as many sisters. Once we were done chuckling, it did make me wonder how many women are lucky enough to have men who can out-shine my Golden Retriever.

Now you shouldn’t expect that your man will happily eat the same thing every day without complaining, but there are many characteristics that he should measure up on. So here are a few traits where your guy should at least be on par with a Golden:

  • No Grudges—This is not to say that he never gets annoyed with you, but once the argument is over, he shouldn’t be holding a grudge
  • Good Listener—Not being able to talk is big advantage for our four-legged friends, but a sincere look of interest when you’re speaking is a must from any guy
  • Looks Forward to Seeing You—He doesn’t have to leap about when you walk in the door, but a smile and a kiss rather than a grunt or nod in your direction should be the typical greeting
  • Loyal—It’s fine for him to be busy with work or out with the guys, but when you really need him, need he’s there for you

Just for the record, my guy measures much higher than my Golden. If your guy doesn’t, then you should think long and hard about replacing him. And please, when you’re describing a man who treated you badly, don’t say “He’s a dog.”
