Craving That Love of Someone Else

Why is it that we crave the love of someone else, the opposite sex (or same sex if that’s your preference)? Why isn’t loving ourselves or having the love of our friends and family enough? I know plenty people, myself included, who love themselves, but still desire the love of someone else. We want that relationship, those feelings of closeness and togetherness that only our mate can give us. I often wonder why we have this innate desire to be loved by others, and those others have to be a mate or lover or whatever we want to call it. After a bad relationship ended, and I was hurting and feeling bad I would often contemplate this question. I would tell myself that this person was only a man (more like a boy) and ask myself why I felt like I needed his love.

I was watching Oprah, again, and the subject was desire and how for women the feeling of desire is like an orgasm. Everyone has that need to be desired, that longing to feel completely wanted by someone. I believe this to be totally true. I dated this guy for a few months, and the thing that made me like him even more was that he totally and completely made me feel that he wanted me. It was more of a turn on then anything else. Although I’ve had some very horrible relationships and some very awesome relationships, there have only been a couple of guys that he made me feel completely desired. Orgasms are wonderful, but there is no better feeling than being wanted.

Again, I wonder what is in our DNA that makes us have this need for love from someone else? Why can’t we grow up thinking that our parents love, or our friends love or the love we give ourselves is just enough? And that anything else is just a bonus?
