Baby Shower Gifts: Ten Savvy Suggestions

Compiling a thorough baby shower gift registry can sometimes feel like the first major induction into parenthood—especially for first-time parents—as they try to suss out what they actually “need” from what is just propaganda. There’s an understandable, undeniable need to feel prepared to meet Baby’s every need, to be equipped for all manner of awkward and new scenarios. And for good reason: raising a newborn is tough work and, depending on your lifestyle, can require lots of gear.

There’s no shortage of info on “necessary” gear (car seat, crib, stroller, diapers, onesies)—type an online search for “newborn essentials,” and you’ll be inundated with results. But many of these items are shortsighted—intended for use during only the first few months—and product driven. For a more well-rounded registry, think beyond the newborn stage, and think creatively. Or just choose from the favorite suggestions that follow. They’re proven, practical must-haves for every savvy mama—whether it’s her first pregnancy or her fourth.

1. A 529 college savings plan. Instead of registering for $200 designer crib bedding, make a 529 college savings plan number one on your list. It’s one of the smartest, most forward-thinking things you can do for your child. You don’t pay federal tax on investment earnings, and you likely won’t owe state taxes, either. Every U.S. state offers at least one plan for qualified colleges, so review them to compare benefits and features. Anyone can open an account, and typically anyone can make a contribution. For more information, including the top 529 plans, check with Consumer Reports.

2. A website in the baby’s name. For as little as $10 a year, become the official administrator of a domain in the little one’s name. It’s a relatively inexpensive way to ensure that by the time Baby becomes Adult, she will have her very own eponymous URL—before someone else with the same name snatches it up. A bonus is that a parent may use the website early on to share photos, videos, and more. Use an official registrant to easily verify the availability of the name you want to use; if it is available, buy it. That’s it! Try GoDaddy.com and Register.com—two of the largest, longest-standing resources around.
