Blame It on Einstein

Baby Einstein is under attack again, and this time they’re retaliating by giving back.

For years, Baby Einstein has been the target of advocacy groups claiming that their DVDs are not in fact “educational” and actually dumb children down. Now Walt Disney is offering a full cash refund to anyone who has purchased a BE DVD in the last five years.

Several months ago, I had the chance to attend a blogger summit hosted by Baby Einstein. Surrounded by what I like to call “been there done that moms,” I admitted that I had heard Baby Einstein was evil and that my son would literally lose brain cells. The execs kindly explained the philosophy behind the brand and the BTDTMs laughed and said (with their eyes) “just you wait.”

While my son never got “hooked on” BE, mostly because of his age when I introduced the videos, he is ridiculously addicted to Sesame Street, and well ... You Tube. Yep, that’s right. You Tube. He even has his favorite videos (Beach Boy’s “Kokomo” is all time favorite. Don’t ask).

The point is, as a mom who walks around with constant guilt, even when I’m at my very best and following every rule in “the book,” it gets exhausting to defend my choices. I shouldn’t be made to feel like I’m a bad mom because I let my son watch a little TV and because, frankly, I’m okay with it.

Are you “okay with it” too? OR will you be sending your DVDs back to Disney?
