Coping with Holiday Stress

The thought of holidays may warm our hearts and have the kids excitingly anticipating all the fun. However, the holidays can also be a stressful time, making you dread what may lie ahead …

You may have to:

  • Prepare for family visiting and have to entertain
  • Prepare to travel with the children
  • Rearrange finances for holiday expenditures
  • Alter plans at last minute if your child is ill
  • Alter decorations around your home for children’s safety
  • Deal with personality clashes with other family members during family gatherings

Here are some ways to help your family have a fun and low-stress holiday season:

Stick to your beliefs:

  • If you travel each year, it’s okay to take a break and say “no” to traveling.
  • You are responsible for your own family only; don’t waste time trying to please all members of your extended family. If you are entertaining, delegate to those who are willing to help.
  • Get your shopping done early! I do mine after I’ve bought our Halloween costumes! Most of my shopping is done online, so it’s quick and easy.
  • If money is an issue, start stashing money away when summer begins. You’ll be surprised at how much you can save by December.
  • Take the focus of yourself and focus on the children and their never-ending joy of the holidays.
  • If you prepare for the fast pace of this particular season and potential chaos, you will be less shocked for what may arise.

Take a deep breath and try to center yourself and enjoy the moment. Children remember everything about the holidays. Therefore, make efforts to be at your best and have as much fun as possible!
