The tough, wonderful job of being a mom gets even trickier when the time to go back to school rolls around. Whether it’s getting the kids where they need to be, whipping up the endless lunches, or getting them settled into the dorm, it takes a sense of humor, a strong back, and the ability to keep their confidence up. Tell us what you are doing to make their transition a positive experience!

Notes in lunchbag. Hugs every morning and every evening. family game night once a week.
I'm letting my kiddos participate in the process. They've helped me shop for supplies, plan lunches, etc.

My daughter is 7 and will be entering 2nd grade this year. To prepare her for the school year and make sure that she has a positive experience we go back to school shopping letting her pick out her own clothes so that she feels comfortable with what she wears. Normally, on this day we will pick out a few extra things and take them to our local homeless shelter and my daughter will donate some clothes to a child that may not be able to afford new school clothes. This lets my daughter see how fortunate she is and how great it is to help others in need. We teach her that you must be nice to everyone you encounter, because you never know what kind of situation the other person may be in. We start about a week early and get in the routine of going to bed earlier and getting up early so that she's ready for that on the first day. She makes sure to eat her breakfast that she helps me prepare so that she has her "brain food" and is ready to attack the day with learning :)

To get my daughter prepared we go and get the new clothes, supplies and she gets a fresh haircut for the school year. When we shop I let her help me pick out her clothes and she will even pick things out for herself. A few days before school we meet her new teacher and see if any of her friends will be in the same class as her.
I have my son do activity papers often, so that he keeps what he has learned fresh in his mind and won't forget a lot that he has learned. Also, I let him pick out a lot of his school supplies and items, so he will feel more comfortable. Also, we went and met his teacher and found out other students that would be in his class. He seems to be really happy with his new teacher and fellow classmates, so the transition should go much smoother.
No children in this household but your wonderful prize would be a blessing to send loved ones something dear.
I'm raising my grandson, who is 7, and just started second grade. When we went to "sneak a peak" day at his school, I was really excited to see which teacher he was placed with. While I genuinely DO think he has the best one, I made a big deal out of how good a teacher she is, and how glad I am that he has her this year. Also made much over having some of his friends from last year in the class, and how much fun they were going to have learning so many new and interesting things this year. Last year he struggled with a less than supportive teacher after having to change schools in the middle of the year. This year he is excited to get up in the morning and looking forward to the day!
To make the transition a positive one, we go to the library and read books all about going to school- the first day of school, how much fun school can be, funny things that happen in school.
