Right now there’s a slew of Reality TV shows following the lives and misadventures of pregnant teens. What kind of message is this sending to our daughters?
With shows like 16 and Pregnant, and Teen Mom, and even the new drama Life Unexpected, should parents be concerned that their own teenage daughters may (the wrong) glimpse of pregnancy?
One of the moms on 16 and Pregnant gave her baby up for adoption, the rest of them kept theirs. They’ve followed all the moms, including the one that gave hers up for adoption, to show the struggle, but also the absolute conviction she feels that she did the right thing, and that her baby is having a better upbringing than it ever would have had with her. While her quest to find a better life for her child is admirable, as moms, should we be concerned that shows like these are hurting our daughters and sending them messages that getting pregnant at a young age is okay and that somehow “it will all work out” (and ooh, maybe even get on a TV show to document it all ...)?
Recently, one of our confessors wrote this:
521494: Is it just me, or does it seem slightly sick that there’s a TV show all about teen moms? Just what does that say about our society? And what message is that sending to other teens? I’ve never seen it, but the premise of the show seems sick to me.
Tell us Truu Moms, what do you think? How do you feel about these teen pregnancy shows? Should our children be exposed to them?
