With the right training, supervision, and equipment, most sports can be considered safe for children. Parents of kids in extreme sports point out that danger is all around us, and you can’t raise your child in a bubble. I concur—in theory. I’m trying to adopt a mellow mama attitude, but I think you should minimize risk when possible.
The takeaway message for me is that even seemingly safe sports like soccer and golf can cause injury, but most of those injuries are survivable and preventable. Still, I may introduce my daughter to croquet.

I'm glad to see that horseback riding is last on the list. I have ridden horses since I was 5 years old, and I know there are many people that think that horse back riding is really dangerous, yet there are sports at the top of the list that they let their kids play, not even thinking much about it! lol Sorry, just thought that was interesting :) I've shown and trained horses and have fallen off a few times over the years, but have never had a broken bone.
Are you kidding me you have missed a really dangerous one! COMPETITIVE CHEERLEADING!!! That is soo dangerous i get hurt almost ever year from something and every practice i about have a bloody mouth (ihavebraces) from getting hit in the mouth
All I have tosay is-it looks like every sport is dangerous. What is left that isn't dangerous that kids would want to participate in? Any ideas fellow readers?
One sport missing is Cheerleading, from all of the stunts, pyramids, the flipping and the throwing up in the air. Cheerleading is very dangerous...
What great information! I wonder if the rankings take into consideration the number of kids who participate in each. As a pediatrician and mom of of 3, the most dangerous sport in our family is skateboarding, hands down. It's fast and involves risky tricks. The better you get, the riskier it is. They lived through it, but there were days I considered having the helmets permanently attached to their heads.
