All the World's Children Can Find Refuge in Words

1. Visit The Global Campaign for Education and get involved in Global Action Week on April 23-26

2. Donate books to The Children's Village

3. Contribute to the United Nations Millenium Project

4. Connect your teaching to social action by asking your students to work on social action projects each month in your classroom

5. Ask how a read aloud will change your life and your students' lives; read Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge, by Mem Fox, or An Angel for Solomon Singer, by Cynthia Rylant

6. For every book your students read, ask the school community to donate funds towards a literacy cause

7. Sponsor a child through Save the Children

8. Support the work of Kimmie Weeks at Youth Action International, who fights for the right of children of war to have childhoods on the continent of Africa

9. Write to your legislators to express your continued support of the Universal Declaration for Human Rights, which states that every child has the right to be educated

10. Take one hour of your afterschool time to read to a child in a local homeless shelter or foster care agency: every minute counts!
