Giving Books: A Great Holiday Tradition

The lure of electronics for young children is strong: lots of flash, motion, sound, and color. Screens and toys can be hypnotic. But books go deeper; they engage the mind and imagination. There’s a world of books out there for our children of all ages.

Holidays are a good time to build a library for our children—their own collection of treasured books worth taking care of and maybe (unbeknownst to them), passing on to another generation. Similar to the library down the street, a collection that includes timeless good reads as well as the books of the moment we also love.

Personal libraries are built through gifts. Establishing traditions of giving books on holidays, birthdays, or even at family celebrations of any kind can help to grow lifelong readers and build a library for your child that will be passed on to future generations. The below link brings you to lists of great children’s books to give to your children for their library. Each book listed is linked to Growing Readers Online which allows you to purchase the book from Amazon.com.

All Amazon purchases will benefit the Bright Horizons Foundation for Children’s programs for homeless children. For more information on the Bright Horizons Foundation for Children, please visit www.brighthorizonsfoundation.org.
