Fallen Princesses

Photographer Dina Goldstein gives us a more modern interpretation of the classic fairy tale princess. Her work can be found at dinagoldstein.com.

Interestingly, Goldstein didn’t read fairy tales as a kid. After she became a mom, she realized what an impact they have on young children.

But then that's not really helping with children's imagination and creative development, that'll be just turning them into little adults, children need a childhood and they need these stories, to come up with their own ideas on things, so no you don't need stories like that

I LOVE these photographs! They are all too true and fly in the face of the ill-informed. The reason there are so many unhappy people out there is because they DO have those fairy tale expectations loaded in their brains. Doing no more preparation for life than just waiting for a prince to to take you away and "live happily ever after" is the same mentality as coasting through school, acquiring no skills and still believing that "someone will hire me and give me a paycheck". I have an idea. Instead of reading fairy tales to our children, why don't we read actual personal success stories. Not the kind where someone wins the lottery, but read stories where someone sets a goal, makes concious common sense decisions, applies due diligence, works hard, overcomes obstacles, and perseveres despite the odds. Now those would be motivational and give something useful to kids.

Man, this lady and her photography is just sad and pessimistic. Setting realistic expectations isn't the point nor purpose of these stories. Kids around the world have to deal with the harshness of reality every day, so why bring them down even more? I hope this lady doesn't try to impose this sense of "realism" and dread on her kids with these photos :/

I love this concept. In fact, I really loved it when my wife did this as a college project 7 years ago. Speaking as an unbiased husband...my wife's was executed with better technique, creativity, and grit as well.
It feels good to write.
