Good ’n Greasy: Ten Fast-Food Chains with Cult Followings

I’ve never had an In-N-Out cheeseburger. Most of the country hasn’t either, but since I grew up in California, where Double Doubles and Animal Style reign supreme, that makes me somewhat of an anomaly. Unless I ditch vegetarianism, there’s little chance of that changing, but people here are so devoted, it makes me wonder what I’m missing. Friends of mine have driven miles out of their way, passing many other burger chains in the process, just to wait in a long drive-through line at In-N-Out. It’s still fast food, but clearly something sets it apart from McDonald’s and the rest.

This isn’t just a West Coast thing, either. We have In-N-Out here, but the other side of the country calls White Castle king. In the South, there’s Krystal hamburgers. In fact, numerous regional fast-food chains across the country inspire cultlike fanaticism among patrons. These places aren’t just quick and cheap eateries—they’re institutions and, in some cases, even tourist destinations

1. Bojangles’ Famous Chicken ’n Biscuits
You can find Bojangles in eleven states across the South. The chain specializes in sweet and savory biscuits (sweet potato, cinnamon, boberry, etc.), crispy Cajun-spiced chicken sandwiches, sweet tea, and other regional culinary delights. Members of food-appreciation sites like Serious Eats and Chowhound constantly mention Bojangles as one of the best chains around.

2. Whataburger
Whataburger is to Texas what In-N-Out is to California, though it’s found in a few other states too, like Louisiana, Alabama, and Florida. The menu has the usual burgers and chicken sandwiches, but also offers a surprisingly large breakfast menu—including items like Honey Butter Chicken Biscuits and breakfast taquitos—from 11 p.m. until 11 a.m. every day.

3. Capriotti’s
This specialty sandwich shop chain can be found in ten states, including Delaware and Nevada. It offers a plethora of different sandwiches, but the Bobbie, with turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and mayo, is the national bestseller.

4. White Castle
White Castle’s best known for its sliders, mini-burgers that are so popular, they come in Crave Cases that hold thirty of them. You can also buy them frozen in supermarkets across the country, but the experience just isn’t the same. Aside from being popularized in movies (Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle), this institution has the distinction of being America’s first hamburger chain.

5. Krystal
Like White Castle’s, Krystal’s hamburgers are small and square-shaped. Unlike White Castle, Krystal is found in the South, in more than 380 locations. The chain also offers Pups, mini-hot dogs topped with cheese and/or chili.

6. Wahoo’s Fish Tacos
Taco Bell might be the chain numero uno for tacos in other areas, but Southern California residents like theirs courtesy of Wahoo’s. If you ever watched MTV’s Laguna Beach, you saw the teen stars hitting up Wahoo’s fairly often. And now the chain’s been extended to Texas and Colorado, too.

There is another restaurant chain that is concentrated in the MD / VA / DC - Roy Rogers. Most people may remember when Roy's was a nationwide chain of more than 600 restaurants. There are about 50 now, with most of them in and around Frederick MD and Northern VA. Anyway, they still make what is arguably the best Roast Beef sandwich around. It's real roast beef, slow-roasted and sliced. The bun is dipped in butter and the beef is dipped in an au jus just before serving. It's so much better than the processed floor sweepings that Arby's serves!
you must live in a bubble vicki. i grew up in las vegas and there are sonics all over the valley. the first one i went to opened up in 92 on the east side near sunrise mountain. raising cane's isn't just in the south anymore. they also have a location or two in las vegas as well.

Wow, I'm happy to see Bojangles at the top! Their quality ingredients and extraordinary seasonings really set them apart from anyone who sells chicken or biscuits. And the dessert biscuits taste way more like a pastry then you might think. Give them a try, you'll get hooked.

I'm glad you mentioned Five Guys at the end of the article, as I was about to criticize you for leaving it out. Although Five Guys is an East Coast chain (started in Virginia by 5 brothers), they recently opened one in Mesa, AZ. I dont know what it is about Five Guys but I am drawn to it like a moth to a flame. The burgers are good and simple, you can get them with whatever you want on them. And the fires are just plain good. Everything is fresh (there are 50 lb bags of potatoes stacked in the area in front of the counter). Everyone behind the counter is friendly and helpful. McDonalds hasnt been like that for over 30 years, except in their commercials. FYI-If you live in the Phoenix, AZ area, try Lucky Boy Burgers, at 16th & Osborn. Hole in the wall burger place, great food. Keep up the good articles, DC...

I've eaten at all of these save Raising Cane. I don't know if that means I'm well traveled or a junk food junkie. Considering that I eat junk food only once or twice a month I'll go with well traveled. I think there is several reasons these places are beloved. One is quality, for example In n Out is basic ingredients but everything is fresh you can see them cut the potatoes that will be yours as you order them, Chi-fil-A is simply really high quality chicken, most places have flowers on the table and only hire really nice kids who have to keep certain levels of modesty, appearance, and customer service high. So it's generally a great place to go and get treated well and generally are very clean. Krystal is addictive even though it's the guilty pleasures of places I go, even more so than White Castle. I know this list can't have every fast food joint but freshness, great customer service, clean stores and regional pride go far. Sonic is a Mecca of great drinks we go out of our way for
