The Scoop: The Best and Worst Vanilla Ice Cream Brands

When I began my illustrious career as an ice cream scooper in college, it wasn’t the lines that stretched out the door in the summertime or the people who took ten minutes (and multiple samples) to order that bugged me the most. Instead, it was the occasional person who ordered a scoop of vanilla in a cup. No hot fudge sauce, no sprinkle of nuts, not even a sugar cone on top. I couldn’t fathom why someone would satisfy her sweet tooth with something so ordinary in a sea of Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Dough and Coffee-Almond Fudge.

But after some time behind the counter, I realized that vanilla ice cream is more than just the best foundation flavor (better than chocolate, in my opinion). When done right, it has a robust, sweetly nostalgic flavor that needn’t be marred by additional ingredients. Unfortunately, far too many brands fail to achieve this. That’s why the DivineCaroline team sampled a variety of national brands to find the ones that give vanilla in a cup a good name—and the ones you can leave in the freezer aisle.

Run Out and Buy This Right Now

Häagen-Dazs Vanilla
Out of all seven brands we tried, this was the majority favorite by far. It was creamy and undeniably decadent, and the vanilla flavor came through without being too overwhelming. It lacked the artificial taste of the others, thanks to its five recognizable ingredients: cream, skim milk, sugar, egg yolks, and natural vanilla. It tasted like a spoonful of luxury, possibly because it has almost double the fat content of the other brands. But one bite of this, and you’ll forget all about that.

Suitable in Desperate Situations

Breyers All Natural Vanilla
This was the prettiest ice cream of the bunch, with a snowy white color and small flecks of vanilla bean. Because it claimed to be all-natural, I think the group had high hopes for a fresh, standout taste. Instead, half the tasters felt the aftertaste was too artificial, despite the brand’s claim to the contrary. The vanilla flavor was overwhelmingly strong, to the point that it bordered on almondlike.

I am a vanilla fan. Have always been. It is so hard to find a good home made tasting ice cream. In Bloomington, Indiana, many years ago there was a creamery called White Mountain. It was the best French Vanilla ice cream. Anyway, I have always been a fan of Haagen daz. A few years ago it began tasting a little different. I don't know if they changed the recipe (I've had it for over 30 years). When I went to Texas (Padre Island) a few years ago, I was told to try Blue Bell home made vanilla, because it would remind me of my childhood days when our nanny used to make us the best home made ice cream. It was actually frozen custard. Well, I couldn't believe the experience. Sadly, we cannot get it here in Utah, I don't know why, but Cracker Barrel restaurants have them in their dessert menu!!! If you are really a vanilla fan, you have to try the Home Made Blue Bell flavor.

I love haagen dazs...but last week tried their vanilla bean and was disappointed. The creamy texture was not there. My new favorite is suprisingly kroger's private selection reserve Madagascar Vanilla (the small PINT-unlike the smaller haagen dazs now :( ) Omg it is so much creamier and better taste than haagen dazs-and cheaper and you get more in the container. Try it you wont be disappointed.
Forget the rest! Blue Bell all the way!

I too was flabbergasted to not see Blue Bell as part of the survey. I have grown up on Blue Bell Ice Cream and have taken my kids to tour Blue Bell more than once. There is no vanilla ice cream better suited for the Texas heat or to accompany your slice (or two) of pecan pie! I love Blue Bell and was thrilled to see my fellow Texans speak up to point out it's not a true survey if the best isn't included.

Now I want some ice cream! I have to admit to being a choco-holic. You can't make it too dark for me for me. If this describes you too, you have to try Publix brand Chocolate Trinity. Dark chocolate ice cream with swirls of even darker chocolate. So good!
