Call me weird, but I love to pull weeds. I even volunteered to pull weeds at my church.
I get behind on the job sometimes. But eventually ... I get on my knees and soon they are cleared away. It isn’t hard to do. This chore gets laid aside more than others because it isn’t staring me in the face like the dirty dishes or the piles of laundry. I can avoid seeing those weeds for a long time.
But then I get started ... and with each pull, I feel so good about myself. I see the benefits of my efforts immediately. The grass and flowerbeds thank me by looking clean and healthy. And I feel … like I have done a remarkable thing. I have protected my beloved greenery from attack by the outsiders that want to destroy it.
Your favorite chore might be organizing the linen closet or the spice collection … with labels even! Or you may pat yourself on the back when the kitchen is spotless or the laundry is all done. Whatever the accomplishment is ... you did it!
I will be pulling weeds for the last time this season. Then winter will set in and slow down the growth of all green things. Never mind ... then it is the time of year to curl up in a blanket with a good book and take a moment to pull some of those insidious creepy crawlers that have established themselves firmly in my soul. The holidays are here and I take a moment to note that my intentions are good but my actions often are not. Best to just sit back, observe where I am and where I am going, and get down on my knees. The weeds don’t stand a chance!
