Nothing Like Home for the Holidays

I’m sure a lot of people would nod “mmhmm” or smile when I ask the question, “What happened to the meaning of Christmas!?”

Sad but true, these days Christmas has become more about who spends the most money rather than the most time. Who gives more presents rather than more hugs. It’s frankly ridiculous, humorous, frightening, and sickening all at once. Though I’m sure all families don’t go by this standard, I would love to meet those who truly do not care about receiving gifts.

I’ve heard a lot of people discuss this topic and I’ve always sided with those who said that the holidays should be about being with family and feeling grateful for what blessings you already have in your life. That’s a very true statement, but I have to bring up the factor of whether or not we actually practice what we preach.

Think about it—as children growing up, what’s the first thing we are taught about Christmas? Santa Claus, flying reindeer, snow, and presents under the tree. Bombarded by the rush of excitement, if we turn around and tell our children after the fact about the miracle of Christmas and being with the family, do we really believe that will outweigh the anticipation of countless toys they will play with once? Children grow up and learn about Santa Claus not being real (I’m only kidding, if you still believe) and make lists for their moms, dads, grandparents, aunts, and uncles of countless items based on the Sunday circulars. Granted, many still gather with family and loved ones, but it’s typical that the “main event” doesn’t begin until the presents are exchanged.

Don’t get me wrong, I love to see the look on everyone’s faces when they receive things they will enjoy, but after the initial shock is past, we have to look past the wrapping and see that all we really have and need in this world is each other.

Cheesy? Maybe. But remember, you look twice as ridiculous gushing over those diamond earrings.
