A Cup of Tar, Java, Brain Juice, Mud, Mojo: A Cup O' Joe

Do you ever find that you need just a bit of caffeinated relief in the afternoon? My long-time caffeinated vice of choice was Cherry Coke. I could go through a two-liter in one day. ONE DAY! That’s 67.62 ounces of Cherry Coke, which equals 879 calories and 237 grams of sugar. Needless to say, part of the transformation to my healthy lifestyle included giving up soda in all forms with allowing an exception a couple times during the year. I mean, sometimes you just need a soda! But remember, everything in moderation—especially, when it comes to sugar.

Now that I’ve given up Cherry Coke, my primary venue for a 2 p.m. caffeine boost is coffee. Coffee has a long-time reputation for causing increased risk of cancer and heart disease. And, thanks to Cher Horowitz, we believed drinking too much coffee could stunt your growth! However, the truth is that coffee has a high content of antioxidants.

Coffee can provide you with health benefits if you drink it in moderation (one to three cups per day).  It can lower your risk of Type-2 Diabetes, Parkinson’s disease and cancer by acting as an antioxidant.  It can also help to speed up your metabolism, which doesn’t hurt if you are trying to drop a couple of pounds. But, don’t overdo it! Heavy caffeine drinkers will suffer from anxiety and restlessness, so be mindful of your servings.

“Everybody should believe in something. I believe I’ll have another coffee.”—Author Unknown
