Honey: the Rx for Allergies!

So we’ve all heard that a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down. Do you know, though, that a spoonful of honey might be even better for you?

Honey grown locally may be very beneficial for you and your family, especially if allergies touch your life. Allergies develop when one is exposed more than once to allergens in one’s environment. Quite often this allergen is to plants which pollinate via the wind … that is, their pollen is loosened, and then distributed, by the wind.

The good news is, bees gather pollen, and a small amount of it is present in the honey they subsequently produce. When you eat honey that is made by local bees, the pollen you are eating can act rather like a natural vaccination. It can help boost your immune system and help it understand how to deal with the local allergens.

I’m trying this myself—sadly, I only started taking the recommended daily teaspoonful of local honey a couple of weeks ago. The recommendation is to start a daily regimen at least a couple of months prior to your allergy season. (Oh, if only all regimens were so rigorous!) I’ll keep you posted.

Until then, the next time you reach for a sweetener, why not have it be for some locally produced honey? You will likely be supporting a local, independent farmer, as well as making a difference in your family’s health!

Plus, it is so delicious. Pooh was right—that honey pot is gold.

This is absolutely false. The pollen that causes allergies is not from honey, it is from trees, grass and weeds. see http://blog.allergybegone.com/blog/welcome‐to‐jakes‐blog/0/0/10‐common‐allergy‐myths
