Milk Sucks!

I’m risking angry bloganista milk-believers comments, and adding my voice to the “Milk is bad” chorus. I’ve been vegan for six months—no dairy products (no chocolate or creamy frothy lattes, etc.).

Since eliminating milk:

  • My asthma has disappeared
  • I’ve not had a single pimple poking from my chin
  • And there’s string of other health complaints that I won’t bore you with that are now gone

So … for a while I’ve said to people, I think milk is bad for you. They always respond, “What?! You need milk for calcium. If you don’t drink milk, your bones will crumble, you’ll be a pile of ash before you hit fifty!”I usually, responded, “A cabbage has more calcium and iron than a glass of milk.” But now, I have found some good sources to back me up.

So, my fellow blogging females, here are some good reasons to find alternatives to milk:

1. It gives you a snotty nose. According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, cow’s milk is the number one cause of food allergies in children.

2. You’re drinking pus. Dairy cows are milked so often their poor udders develop open wounds. That blood and pus is part of the milk you drink. The dairy industry term for measuring the pus content in milk is “somatic cell count.”

3. It gives you pimples. The fat, animal protein, sugar, and hormones in milk can irritate the skin. My eczema and acne have disappeared since crossing milk off my shopping list.

4. It contains rat poison, or Vitamin D-3. This vitamin is advertised helping your to absorb calcium. In fact it does the opposite.

5. It makes you fart. Dairy cows are bred nowadays with hormones pumped into them for abnormally large udders. The milk is also pasteurized removing natural enzymes that would help with digesting the substance. The result? It’s awfully hard for our little tummies to process this milk, and the result is a flatulency.

6. It may even cause osteoporosis, thanks to the high-protein content, which leaches calcium from your bones! (Exactly the opposite of what dairy industries advertise!)

(Most of these links come from PETA. They have alternative motives for us not drinking milk, but their argument is very compelling …)

There’s the other side of the coin. For instance, here’s a Web site called WhyMilk. I find their argument very superficial and skin-deep …

So I put it to you, my well-read and research-savvy sisters. Yay or nay for milk?

Hi Carla, you make a good point. There are other details, that due to limited space, I thought best to leave out (the internet is not a good spot for long monologues! :) I have in fact (in the past) cut out dairy products, while eating meat. In fact this is the safest way of going about things... rather than being vegan and cutting out milk! I think it would have worth while though to emphasise the need for substitutes (like soya, cabbage, green leaves, etc) - so you're point is well taken. Either way, thanks so much for commenting, it's good to know that there are people on the other side of this screen :) (or sort of!) Ciao for now, Lilly
Carla has said it all. I totally agree with her.

Hi Lilly! I really liked your article, but I still have my doubts. I've been substituting dairy milk for soy milk and I've seen some differences already. However, I think that advocating against milk is somewhat dangerous (unless you share PETA's motives), because each person is different and it all depends on the diet. For example, you say that cabbage has more calcium than milk and you, as a vegetarian, probably eat a lot of cabbage, but that is not common for most of the people. So, it is important to emphasize that you need to change your whole diet and not only get rid of the milk. Another thing is that you say since you eliminated milk from your diet you've been noticing a lot of improvements on your health, but at the same time, you said that you've become vegan. How can you be sure that the improvements are from your eliminating milk and not from the other changes on your diet? In summary, I think your article is very good because makes us think about the subject.
It feels good to write.
