Quality: The Big Four

Poor quality fats: Hydrogenated oil, partially hydrogenated oil, hydrogenated palm kernel oil, margarine, cottonseed oil, olestra, some cooking oils, fried foods.

“These fats which are chemically different from the quality kind, literally become the building blocks of our cell wall. The result is that the cell wall becomes more rigid, susceptible to oxidation(rusting or aging), and less intelligent - it loses its ability to make smart choices about what goes in and what comes out ... brain tissue is more easily oxidized and becomes biologically stiff (and thus stupid).” - Marc David

There you have it, low quality fats actually make us stupid! He also goes on to explain how we are then uninteresting at parties, and it increases the chances of diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia. Instead try: olive oil, sesame oil, coconut oil, sunflower, flaxseed, hazelnut, pistachio, hempseed, macadamia nut oils, butter, and ghee.

Poor quality dairy: mass produced, non organic, hormone containing cheese, milk, yogurt, cream cheese, cottage cheese, flavored milks, snack foods with cheese by-products.

“If you experience any combination of chronic sinus complaints, nasal or lung congestion, postnasal drip, digestive sensitivity, headaches, multiple allergies, and dry skin, you are a great candidate to experiment with a diet free of all milk and dairy-containing products..” - Marc David

I did suffer from dairy sensitivities for a while but it turns out I was able to be helped. There are natural remedies if you have some of the symptoms mentioned above so you don’t have to avoid dairy the rest of your life, but he has a good point. Dairy is very difficult to digest and can leave many symptoms behind. I don’t believe we were built to process dairy; however, we have adapted. Better forms of dairy are: Milk (raw, organic, unpasteurized), cheese(organic), yogurt (full fat, organic), cottage cheese(full fat, organic), butter, soy cheese.

Poor quality sugar: High fructose corn syrup, fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, glucose, Florida crystals, artificial sweeteners.

“After forty years of exposure to fake chemical sweeteners, not a single study has ever shown an even mildly convincing association between sugar substitutes and weight loss ... researchers are now discovering artificial sweeteners—fake pleasure—may actually cause us to gain weight.” - Marc David

Most of you know how much I preach my absolute disapproval of artificial sweeteners and high fructose corn syrup so this comes as no surprise to me. It is proven that artificial sweeteners cause sugar cravings as your body is waiting for the real thing(and who can blame it!) Instead try: raw honey, maple syrup (watch those labels it may still have corn syrup), barley malt, agave, or sucanet.

Poor Quality Meats: Fast food meats, processed meats, frozen prepared food, meat that is not free range, hormone free and fed real food.

“The Kobe cows live in Hawaii. They enjoy perfect weather and sunshine, they eat the healthiest, tastiest grass grown on nutrient-rich volcanic soil, they breathe fresh island air and have a beautiful ocean view, they are blessed with plenty of time for socializing and quiet reflection. They’re living the dream. Is it any wonder they taste so good? You would too.” - Marc David

I love this quote. I don’t eat red meat so I have no idea what Kobe beef tastes like, but I find it still very humorous and probably very true. Our animals are abused and tortured, and we expect them to be nutritious and delicious. Instead try: chicken, turkey, beef, pork, lamb, or other meat or poultry that is labeled free range, organic, grass fed, or hormone free.

I understand, however my beliefs do no so much coincide with your comment. I understand your theories I however go off in another direction. My own theories are backed up by much research and I do believe that there are healthier sugars. I believe we didn't eat these other types of sugars before and we were never meant to. Once again this is completely mine and other researchers opinions. You are of course always entitled to your own, I appreciate your theories they just differ from mine.

As a registered dietitian, I must point out that all of the sugars you discuss are considered “empty calories” and because they offer no beneficial nutrients, all can be considered low in nutrition quality. Whether a food is sweetened with honey, refined sugar, or high fructose corn syrup, is really not the issue. What is more important is the overall nutrient quality of the food we eat. Focusing only on single ingredients, such as high fructose corn syrup or other sweeteners, is misleading consumers into thinking that some sweeteners such as white sugar or agave are somehow healthier. All supply very similar amounts of calories and the body cannot distinguish them. Research also shows that beverages sweetened with sugar and high fructose corn syrup have similar effects on feelings of fullness and do not lead to cravings.
