VIDEO: Follow-up to Plastics Story

Source: MSNBC Today Show

Plastic warnings were given on MSNBC's The Today Show yesterday regarding plastics safety (Watch the segment here). Apparently MSNBC drew some fire for the report and invited their Medical Editor to add some additional facts. Could MSNBC have responded to pressure by the plastics industry? You be the judge.

The Today Show's Medical Editor, Dr. Nancy L. Snyderman, is a former employee of Johnson & Johnson, and an accomplished Head and Neck Surgeon.

Rebecca - your conclusion is over simplified and your link is wrong. PURE BPA is what they are talking about. Later studies have uncovered BPAs ability to combine with other chemicals and form compounds which are suspect. BPA does leach out of water bottles and that is confirmed in the same article. They also say the August research is flawed/incomplete and have yet to release any substantial "PROOF" that BPA is safe. When you read these types of scientific articles, don't stop at the first thing that you interpret as your "proof". Everyone needs to read more. Reading will set you free.

Responding to pressure from the plastics industry? No. Covering their asses for trying to pass off alarmist sensationalism as journalism? Yes. The Today Show did this program BEFORE the studies were done. Of course they had to back pedal and clear things up. But now the results are in. Plastics containing Bisphenol A (BPA) are perfectly safe. The European Food Safety Authority has done several studies on this and as a result of its more recent study has said the following: "EFSA concluded that after exposure to BPA the human body rapidly metabolises and eliminates the substance. These results confirm that exposure to BPA is well below the Tolerable Daily Intake of 0,05 mg/kg bw, previously set by EFSA. Newborns can similarly clear BPA at levels far in excess of the TDI." http://www.efsa.europa.eu/EFSA/KeyTopics/efsa_locale‐1178620753812_BisphenolA.htm
