Are Chiropractors Safe? The Bare Bones

“Snap! Crackle! Pop!” No, it’s not your morning cereal. The sounds you hear are coming from your spine as a chiropractor stands over you, manipulating your back into contortions that cause your vertebrae to crack louder than Jiffy Pop. You ask yourself, “Is this a good idea?”

About half of all Americans suffer from back pain, and many turn to chiropractors for help. Those who swear by chiropractic believe it helps them ease myriad complaints, from low-back pain to headaches and even digestive problems and allergies. But the line between fact and fiction is fuzzy when it comes to these claims. There have been very few reputable studies on the effects of chiropractic, and many Western doctors believe the potential risks far outweigh the supposed benefits. After all, we’re playing with spines here, and many chiropractors are admitted to practice without a bachelor’s degree. How are we to distinguish between alternative medicine and quackery?

Dem Bones, Dem Bones
Chiropractic medicine is a holistic approach to wellness that focuses on healing the body through manipulation of the musculoskeletal system, especially around the spine. Basically, chiropractors use a combination of massage, pressure, stretches, and exercises to align your vertebrae; they believe doing so will alleviate pain and balance other systems in the body. It’s meant to be a complementary form of treatment for those with chronic pain who seek a conservative alternative to drugs and surgery.

In order to practice, chiropractors must pass a state licensing exam after completing two to four years of undergraduate education and four years of specialized chiropractic courses. At the end of their training, chiropractors earn a doctor of chiropractic (DC) degree. Some DCs choose to pursue postdoctoral education in areas like neurology, sports injuries, nutrition, occupational injuries, and even pediatrics, but the majority maintain a general practice.

Advocates of chiropractic claim it helps to ease back pain and tension headaches, aid relaxation, improve posture and balance, and decrease inflammation in muscles and joints. Some people even believe it alleviates allergies and digestive woes by removing stress from the central nervous system.

Unfortunately, there are far too many of these articles in circulation. While I'm sure this comment will fall on deaf ears, I'm committed to upholding the standards that I was taught and to educate the public that a properly educated chiropractor can provide quality care to those who need it, regardless of what one blogger might say.

I'll start by saying I'm a board certified, licensed DC in Wisconsin. I also adjust the spine osseously. By no means would I consider myself to be a second class doctor when being compared to any medical professional. As a matter of fact, our chiropractic office works very closely with neurosurgeons, orthopedists and MD's who refer to US for care of their patients. You should keep up with your research. Here's a short list for you Guidelines for Chiropractic Quality Assurance and Practice Parameters. Preceedings of the Mercy Center Consensus Conference; Page 171. Aspen Publications 1993. Here is an objective article about the safety of chiropractic adjustments/manipulation http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18204390 Also I find it very interesting that PTs and osteopathic doctors endure very little scrutiny for joint manipulation. Why would they seek a modality if they too did not see the benefit?

I have been going to a chiropractor for my back for the last 4 months and I have no idea if it is even working. I don't feel that much different or less pain than I did before. I pop my back on my own anyway and I just think that this may be a waste of time. Also, popping your body that much cannot be good, and I believe it causes arthritis, so why should I keep snap crackle and popping, when later on down the road my back pain will be even worse. I JUST DON'T GET IT!?
I go to a chiropractor that only does accupressure. It is wonderful! There is no snap, crackle or popping at all. They get the job done and I feel so much better. They also deal in the all natural remedies. They perform other methods of treatment such as Gua sha. It's an oriental folk remedy which really does work. They do nutritional testing for food allergies and what the body may be lacking in. They recently went through training to do work with releasing trapped emotions. Have any of you heard of the Emotion Code by Dr. Bradley Nelson? They went to his trainings and they are going to be using some of that in their business. They don't and I don't believe in chiropractors that manipulate the spine. They feel, as do I that you are looking for trouble with those sort of chiropractors. Find one like this. You will benefit much and your body will love you for it!
