Essential oils (EOs) are aromatic chemical compounds of plants, trees and fruits. Some botanists believe they are the “hormones” of a plant, regulating metabolism, photosynthesis and immune responses. Essential oils can be inhaled, diffused, added to lotion/oil, made into sprays and in some cases used neat (directly on skin) to assist physical, emotional and spiritual healing.
Essential Oils for Physical Healing
Best EOs for headaches and migraines: peppermint, chamomile, clary sage, lavender, lemongrass, rosemary, rose otto, eucalyptus.
All EOs are antiseptic and will destroy micro-organisms.
Immune boosting EOs that increase white blood cells: frankincense, lavender, lemon, rosemary, and tea tree.
For high blood pressure use lavender, orange, geranium, marjoram, lemon, and clary sage EOs but avoid hyssop, rosemary, thyme, and sage
Uncommon uses for citrus EOs: lemon helps stop bleeding hemorrhoids and orange is used to treat anorexia.
EOs for dandruff: lavender, clary sage, patchouli, rosemary, tea tree, and ylang ylang—mix into liquid castille soap for dandruff shampoo.
Helichrysum is one of the best skincare EOs; use for wound healing, scars, dermatitis, itching, puffiness, athlete’s foot and sunblock.
Vitex (chaste berry) EO restores hormonal balance; simply inhaling it may inhibit hot flashes, menstrual pain and mood swings.
Expectorant EOs that remove mucus and help respiratory conditions: eucalyptus, peppermint, pine, clove, frankincense, ginger, myrrh.
