Blood Transfusion? B12 Deficiency – What Next?

Results from my blood draw at the doctor’s office last week showed I was within transfusion range (something in my blood was at nine, which means I need a transfusion) and that my B12 was deficient. I scheduled my appointment for this morning to talk to the doctor and find out what needs to be done.

I had hubby take me in case I needed to go to the hospital for the transfusion. Instead of that, I was given an order for a blood draw (the nurse was unable to due to the fact that she doesn’t have the right tube) so I will be going to the lab on Monday after work. I’ve already scheduled my appointment and luckily I don’t have to be fasting, which makes me happy and this whole thing ideal.

The doctor wants me to start taking calcium tablets w/vitamin D, which I’ve done and my Slow FE—iron tablets, which, instead of taking on a sporadic basis, will take every day—even though I hate taking them. Now all I need to add to the mix is a monthly B12 shot and a multivitamin.

I got my first dose of B12 this morning, it only hurt a little. I’m hoping I can convince my doctor to let me give the shots myself. I’m a pro at it. I’ve done them before, albeit a few years ago, but I do know how. I was hoping, a long time ago, when I was no longer anemic, that I wouldn’t have to go through this again, but fate has not been so kind.

I’m okay with it, really I am. I have to be, I have no other choice. I can’t get better if I don’t follow doctor’s orders and get this taken care of. So, here I go!
