How I Beat Anorexia-Bulimia: My Personal Story

Hi All.

My name is Irina Webster.

I am a medical doctor with a great interest in all aspects of women's health. I also have a very special interest in eating disorders. As an ex sufferer (Yes doctors are not immune to eating disorders) I have a strong affiliation to anyone suffering from these conditions and want to help as many sufferers as I can beat these afflictions.

When I was an anorexic-bulimic sufferer in my teens I did not think I had a problem, I wanted to look better: or should I say the perception of looking better that was all in my mind, so I developed these conditions.

It was only when I went into medical school that I started to realize what I was doing was not correct.

I started to look for help from my professors at University who did try to help, but they only knew the conventional treatment methods, counseling, group therapy, anti depressants: but none of these worked on me. So I simply developed my own program and cured myself with the help of a friend at that time.

I then forgot about it and concentrated on my studies and being a doctor. Do you know that I never ever told anyone about my previous eating disorder? I was so embarrassed to think that me a doctor who the general public came to for help, had herself been under the yoke of these insidious conditions: I hid it for years. After all I had my credibility to think of, how could I let anyone know I am mortal.

This all changed when a friend came to me about her daughter Amy who I knew was an anorexic-bulimic. Karen told me the full story about how she dealt with Amy and how she cured her of the disorder.

To my amazement it was very similar to what I had done all those years earlier. The difference was that Karen had been much more diligent than me and actually wrote everything she did in a diary.

Her program is a complete step by step program on how to beat an eating disorder at home with the help of a loved one and no outside professional help.

We have now combined our information to include self help for people who have no one to help them or have a part time helper.

It is an amazing program as it covers everything you need to do and it is working so well people contact us everyday to thank us for saving their or loved one from the grip of anorexia-bulimia.

And yes! You may have noticed that I am not scared to talk about my eating disorder, thanks to the courage of Karen and my husband William who is a social anthropologist. These people have shown me that I have something to contribute and I should not be afraid to share.

Hi, Dr.Irina! Thank you for your story. My name is Ksana, and I am recovered bulimic. I am russian too (your beautiful name Irina says it all...) I beat the bulimia. For five long, tenuous years I struggled, gained a little ground and lost a lot of ground, but I never quit. I did not let the setbacks and failures throw me off of my course to get healthy and best this disease. Little by little I began getting the answers to my questions and I began to slowly climb out of that deep, dark pit that was myself. I took baby steps in incorporating successful and healthy changes in my life. My research gave me a few answers, but I am still learning. My web site has my story : www.cureforbulimia.com/recovery1.html I am helpig thousands people in their recovery and I would like to know how did you get rid of bulimia. Is it self recovery? Please let me know. I think is we combine two parts of the world in helping others we "cam save the world"...Thank you again. With high respect. Ksana.
Hi Michelle. Yes there are very few recovery stories around; this is because most treatment methods do not work real well. There are always a huge number of people who relapse. It is basically because if they go to clinics or group therapy sufferers are fine while they are there, but when they have to face things on their own they can’t cope and relapse. What is needed is a system that people can use at home to help them cope with their feelings and this is what Karen has put together. You can read about it at www.mom-please-help.com Also on my website I have a free e-course on my eating disorder page. www.womenhealthsite.com We are only to happy to talk to anyone who is struggling with bulimia and help them to get better. Because there is hope for everyone who wants to beat their eating disorder. Sufferers who have tried to beat their eating disorder and failed before should never give up because they can do it with the correct help. Dr Irina Webster.

Michelle Hope
Hello Dr. Irina. I have a blog (onbulimia.blogs.com) where I share everything I learned in recovery from 14 years of bulimia and in my life since recovery. I am very interested in hearing more about the recovery process you and Karen used. Have you written more about it somewhere? Can you share more here? Would you be interested in doing a guest post on my blog? There are too few stories of recovery to give hope to the many, many people still struggling. I found my success in a professional life coach after all other traditional approaches failed for me, like they did for you. I am finding many similarities in the approaches that actually work, and I would love to hear about yours. You can reach me at my blog or at michelle@michellehope.org. Congratulations to you and many thanks for all the good work you do now. With gratitude, Michelle
