Can you believe that summer is right around the corner? My, how the time has flown by! We’ve weathered through short days and long, dark nights. Through storms and blinding blizzards. We’ve endured below freezing temperatures and icy rains. And now, finally, the warm sunshine is just within our reach. Most of us are looking forward to beaches, amusement parks, and family vacations. We are contemplating the best ways to enjoy our time, cool off and look fabulous. We are anxious to feed the mind, body, and soul; to recoup and relax. With these ten simple rules, I have found a way to feed all three:
1. Give back. Find a way to help those who are less fortunate. You can donate almost anything; clothes, food, time, furniture, the list is endless. Start by de-cluttering your closet. The rule is that if you haven’t worn an item in two seasons then it’s time to get rid of it. Go through your things and pull out your gently used clothing; items that are in great condition but you just don’t have a use for anymore. Find a charity and donate (not sell) the items to someone less fortunate. With recent disasters, there are thousands of families that have lost everything and would be very appreciative of even the smallest donation.
If donating tangible items doesn’t feel like something you can do, then donate your time. It’s valuable. Become a mentor, volunteer your services with a charity, non-profit organization, or a suicide hotline. Make giving back a habit. Trust me, it will mean the world to someone and it will cost you nothing. It’s nice to give without the thought of receiving and it’ll make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
2. Buy something beautiful and flattering. It doesn’t have to be expensive; it just has to make you feel wonderful. It could be a great dress, or a nice pair of high-heeled sandals, or even a pair of designer jeans. Be body conscious and get something that suits you. The key is to ensure that it flatters your personality and your figure, but it’s not so trendy that you can only wear it a few times.
Each year I choose something different. Last year, I chose a beautiful sundress I found in a discounted retail store chain. The dress was navy blue with spaghetti straps and a modest neckline. It came to my knees and was straight but not tight or clingy. Whenever I wore this dress, I felt free and comfortable. The dress lasted the entire summer and boy did I get a good wear out of it. I would wear it with flat-heeled sandals or thongs and chunky necklaces for a Saturday afternoon that turned into evening. And when I wore it to work I would throw on a blazer, nice pearl drop earrings, and pumps. The dress wasn’t expensive but I treated it as if it were a treasure. I hand washed it and line-dried it. I used a cool iron just to relieve some of the wrinkles but not to alter the style of the dress. Caring for an item of clothing allows the piece to always appear fresh and sharp no matter the price. Whenever I wore the dress, I received compliments and that made me feel special. Find something that makes you feel special and wear it often.
3. Treat yourself! You deserve it. Indulge in that double scoop ice cream cone while walking along the beach. That sugar-free popsicle is yummy but go for the popsicle that is not calorie reduced (they’re not too fattening anyway). You say your diet has prevented you from having a slice of pizza or a piece of fried chicken? Just once, go for it and enjoy. You only live once and giving yourself a special treat now and again can be good for the soul. Just remember moderation and don’t blow everything you’ve worked so hard to achieve.
