My response to Sinead O’Connor's suicide attempt
Why do people want to commit suicide? Why chose death? It seems like a selfish, needy, for the weak attention grabber to those who have never experienced it. To the rest of us we know that it is quite the opposite. There are many reasons for attempted suicide. It could be financial, health flaws, relationship failures, or any other for that reason. But for the past three years, the media has shown us attempts by celebrities that seemed to be based on relationships. I clearly identify with this one because I have been there too. I am thirty-one years old now and had attempted to take my life since I was about ten years old. The reason always stemmed from not having enough friends, then as I got older, not having a boyfriend, and the young adult years, having the wrong boyfriend. To those who have not experienced this, they would just say, "Get over it!" "Stop pouting!" "Get back out there!" But to the person in the situation its not that simple. I guess the reason is because some of us have a tendency to love hard. We love hard, we love long, and we want to see our loved ones happy. This puts an incredible amount of stress on us. If you combine that stress that we put on ourselves with the people out there who really don't care how you feel because they are narcissistic, co-dependent, manipulators, or because they are just as messed up as you are, you have a recipe for disaster.
I can't tell you how many times I have heard unsympathetic and ignorant people say: "Their just doing that to get attention." "Or everyone including God will be mad at you if you do." It makes me want to slap them. What they should do instead of making them feel worse is try to put themselves in their shoes, or at least just listen as they talk, help them to reveal to themselves all the things they have to live for.
Let me tell you what worked for me. I had to teach myself not to be stressed by other people's problems. Many times the situation that influenced me to take my life was something I could have either avoided or not took personally. Again, this is hard for us that love hard and strive for perfection. We have to learn that we can only do so much to help others and that our health and happiness comes first.
