(Excerpt from book To All My Sisters in the Struggle)
Mental
You have to keep your mind sharp. If you didn’t graduate high school go get your GED. It will really boost your self esteem. You have to educate yourself not only to stay on top of your game in this world, but also for yourself. I will only tell you what I know. I am not afraid to tell you that I am smart but I am also lazy. Or rather I try to be lazy now; God and his Holy Spirit won’t let me anymore. This is a good thing. I have motivated myself to go get a technical certification, teach school, apply for new jobs, and to learn more in my technical field. And I have to say that makes me feel like an over-achiever. I also know my worth in the job market. Now I haven’t achieved my value in the job market yet, but the difference now from before is that I know that I am valuable and I can actually explain to someone why.
Now keep in mind when you began to work out your goals you will have “Haters.” People that were your close friends and family will no longer want to talk to you. But to be honest, you probably won’t even notice, because you will be so busy working out your destiny! And that is definitely a good thing. Not only that, but you will began to meet people to help you achieve your goals. Now a word of caution, do not, I repeat do not get caught up in these people. They are human and can hurt you just like the last ones did.
God is the only one who will never hurt you or sell you out for a promotion, or any other gain. So realize that other people are only there to pass you batons on your track meet to your destiny. Some are not passing you the baton, they are in the stands cheering you on. But remember, some fans don’t stay for the entire game, some have to go home. Some only watch you on TV.
