The holiday festivities are finally behind us, and that is why I want to address the subject of resolutions. A common topic at the end of December and beginning of January, New Year’s resolutions often involve losing those extra ten pounds, quitting smoking, cleaning up the clutter, or looking for a new job. Resolutions such as these are definitely well intentioned, but if we are serious about realizing them, it is important to set reasonable goals for ourselves and have a plan of action to put them into place. So, now that the holidays are over, let’s give some real thought to your New Year’s resolutions.
Begin by focusing on the things you really want to change or to do. It may help to make a list and prioritize these wishes. Then decide which one(s) you are ready to tackle at this time. After all, there are probably many things about you and your life that are just fine the way they are.
Next, you need a realistic plan and direction to start off the year. This is extremely helpful and feasible to implement as long as you keep your goals to a manageable number. A good practice when setting goals is to plan in enough detail to keep a forward momentum. For instance, it often isn’t enough to just decide to get fit and expect it will happen.
You have to think about the progression that will lead you to realizing your goal. For example, how do you plan to get fit? Walking, riding a bike, hitting the gym? How much time daily are you willing and able to devote to your fitness regime, and when can you work exercise time into your weekly schedule? Considering all of these steps beforehand can make it easier to achieve your desired goal. This same process goes for anything you choose to do, from stopping smoking to remodeling the den.
Something else that can really help set a goal in motion is to imagine it as if it has already happened. It may sound a bit silly, but it helps you become more aware of the steps you need to take in order to reach your goal. At the same time, imagining that you are already there sets up a positive energy that can help you stick to your plan.
With a little planning you can be well on your way to making your resolution(s) for the year a reality. I hope that you be able to obtain these goals with ease, grace, peace, joy, and laughter.
