Back to Reality

“He’s not into you.”

“You are not good enough.”

These are things I hear on a daily basis. From my family, friends, coworkers. Where is the support group we are all suppose to have?

It seems it’s on the Internet. In places like Facebook.

I’ve written before about Facebook and other Internet social groups. It’s become both the vein of my life and the bane of my existence.

My career is Internet-based. My laptop is my work station, my playground, and my only form of communication. But not on purpose.

A male friend of mine, Othello, is recently out of a long-term relationship that he himself had said was bad, and he’s desperately trying to find someone through dating sites. It’s not going well for him.

I had been having the same issues myself and gave up the dating sites, but that’s another article for another time.

Last night, with a deep sigh he simply said to me, “We have to get out and be more social with people offline.”

Now there’s a thought. Unplugging from the computer and actually getting out into the real world again. Can it be done? Should we try? Or have we all gotten too used to having machines between us?

It just seems that as of late, which in my case means the last four years, the only support I have been seeing from people has been online. The Internet has replaced the coffee houses and our best friends are half the world away.

There is more to what I am wanting to say, but at the moment, it’s chaos. I’ll have to leave this for now and return to this topic at a later date. In the meantime, I think I’ll go out for a coffee. The walk will do me good.
