Atom vs. Adam

Picture yourself sitting on your grandfather’s lap. Now picture the king of the jungle, a big hairy gorilla! He can give you rides on his back, teach you how to peel a banana like no one else, and help you snag the hottest blonde around. But you might want to go home before he starts to fling poop at you because you ate all the leaves off his tree! It’s kind of a funny picture huh?

Here’s another scenario: picture the Build a Bear store. You are the giddy little kid that gets to go into the store to “build” your own little friend. First you pick out the animal that you want. You then go on to make it as firm or floppy as you want it to be; then you get to make a wish on it, give it a heart and sew it up. After that, you start picking out its clothes, give it a name, and even make a birth certificate. You just designed your own best friend that you can take anywhere with you. As the creator of your stuffed animal you will always love it and want to take care of it.

Hopefully theses two pictures take you to the ideas of evolution and creation. Webster’s dictionary definition of creationism is “the act of creating; especially: the act of bringing the world into ordered existence.” Whereas the definition for evolution is “the historical development of a biological group (as a race or species)” as stated by Webster’s dictionary. It is often assumed that creation is lacking in science, but we are now realizing that creation does not contradict science and that science is often complementary to the idea of a created universe. By looking at how atoms are formed, the age of the earth, human origins, and the teachings of the Bible, we will be able to see the unique relationship between science and creation.

First off we need to take a trip back to physics class and try to briefly understand what an atom is. According to our friend Webster, an atom is “1: one of the minute indivisible particles of which according to ancient materialism the universe is composed, 2: a tiny particle, 3: the smallest particle of an element that can exist either alone or in combination, 4: the atom considered as a source of vast potential energy.” As we can see atoms are pretty complex things. Atoms can come together to form something as simple as table salt, and as complex as a human being.
