The Wanderer and The Friendly Scorpion

Imagine a world free of worries—a place to explore with no designated trails, and no signs prohibiting access. Your only purpose is for you to find ways to enliven your spirit. The words of the Dalai Lama whisper softly in your ear; “The purpose of our lives is to be happy.”

Your body is immune to stress and your mind is free from the chatter of mundane concerns. The world that is before you is not some alien nation; it is right where you live and breathe in this very moment. Being here makes you feel young again, only better. You have the wisdom and grace of Buddha and you have the strength and flexibility of a yoga master. Your mind is sharp, giving you the ability to elicit details as well as conceptualize from the densest information provided.

A leaf is spiritual gift and a laugh is a divine connection. The vision of a blue bird causes you to stop; something has shifted inside of you. Another gift presents itself, this one is a gift wrapped in feathers of the sky. The song it sings is for you alone; it is an inspirational message to let you know your journey is blessed. There are no dangerous turns, or wrong roads to go down—each path carries treasures within it. Signs are present, but not the ones you are accustomed to on the streets of your former stress-induced life.

A sign to stop is replaced with an inner tug—gentle, but impossible to miss. Obstacles will introduce themselves. A grateful response replaces one of frustration. You were enjoying the road you were taking but a boulder forces you to take another route, which would normally not appeal to you. Its passage is a little rougher; the horizon is flatter, less trees. Browns and yellows replace the green that you found so comforting. But, in this new place a sense of something better keeps you moving forward.

You will know when to yield because your awareness will become heightened. Your senses will find unique gifts that you otherwise would have missed. A pebble along the dirt path catches the light of the sun. When you look down you see a scorpion on the toe of your shoe. Taking a nearby rock, you gently glide your new friend back onto the desert path. Your steps become more deliberate; you are careful not to dismiss a seemingly empty terrain. Each movement is a meditation, each vision a revelation. A tumbling weed, a mysterious groove in the ground, and the beads of sweat you feel on your forehead cause your momentum to slow. The environment is surprising fertile ground; inner knowledge tells you more is visible than an initial glance takes in.

A signal to go will come to you as a relinquishing of control-a pure surrender in which you will trust completely in your instincts. As your breath becomes more balanced, your energy is renewed. Your steps are filled with purpose and your actions become inspired. Your thoughts are uncluttered, free of fear and doubt. Your state of mind is comfortable in an uncomfortable situation. You are giving yourself permission to go the way of the great explorer-to relish in the unknown. Unburdened of an ego which claims each discovery as his own, you travel light with an innocent curiosity.

More signs will come to you along the way-your true nature invites them. Some will come in the form of fellow travelers who will accompany you on this journey. Interaction will be impossible to avoid. Communication will be deeper than the words you speak. If you listen, you will hear and see with a refreshing clarity. More than a dialogue between two people, you will witness a profound insight. Intention, tone, and expression will each provide a spiritual structure-a gift of poetry. You will have the answer to the question, “Who am I?” As spiritual leader, Deepak Chopra, puts it, “The physical world, including our bodies, is a response of the observer. We create our bodies as we create the experience of the world.”
